However, recent reports have raised concerns about compliance with regulations, particularly in Ontario, \u200cwhere over 428 potential violations were documented since 2018. Many of these cases involve patients who were not \u2062terminally ill but rather suffering from poverty, social isolation, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/9-year-old-girl-pepper-sprayed-during-interaction-with-rochester-police\/\" title=\"9-Year-Old Girl Pepper Sprayed During Interaction With Rochester Police\">mental health issues<\/a>. Ontario&#8217;s\u2063 Chief Coroner, Dirk \u2064Huyer, \u200boversees this process and has been\u2062 criticized for insufficient\u2063 enforcement actions; often, violations resulted in\u2063 only informal recommendations rather than serious consequences.\u2063 In a specific period from 2018 to 2023, Huyer&#8217;s office recorded incidents that only rarely escalated to\u200b regulatory or police reporting.\u200d This\u2062 has prompted debates about the adequacy of oversight in the MAID program and its implications\u200b for vulnerable populations.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In Canada, doctors can treat their patients with an unusual medicine: death.<\/p>\n<p>While the nation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/health-services-benefits\/medical-assistance-dying.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claims<\/a> its doctors meet &ldquo;certain safeguards&rdquo; before killing their patients under the label &ldquo;euthanasia,&rdquo; new documents show more than 428 possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/publications\/compliance-problems-maid-canada-leaked-documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criminal cases<\/a> in the province of Ontario alone, according to The New Atlantis. This includes repeat and &ldquo;blatant&rdquo; offenders.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&rsquo;s criminal code <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/health-services-benefits\/medical-assistance-dying.html#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regulates<\/a> the &ldquo;medical assistance in dying&rdquo; program, or &ldquo;MAID.&rdquo; Still, many of its doctors have been <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/euthanasia-ethics-canada-doctors-nonterminal-nonfatal-cases-dfe59b1786592e31d9eb3b826c5175d1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killing<\/a> patients whose deaths could have been avoidable, as they were suffering from being poor, disabled, or lonely, according to The Associated Press.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chief Coroner Dirk Huyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/medical-assistance-dying-memorandum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oversees<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/assisted-suicide-group-teams-up-with-planned-parenthood-honcho\/\" title=\"Assisted Suicide Group Teams Up With Planned Parenthood Honcho\">physician-assisted suicide<\/a> in Ontario. He <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240512021414\/https:\/www.catholicregister.org\/item\/27790-can-a-doctor-assisted-death-be-natural-and-suicide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> in 2018 that &ldquo;Ontario has the strongest oversight of any province or territory in Canada&rdquo; and &ldquo;every case is reported.&rdquo; But as <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/maid-and-marginalized-people-coroners-reports-shed-light-on-assisted-death-in-ontario-241661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> in The Conversation, Huyer&rsquo;s office last month released <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.theconversation.com\/static_files\/files\/3515\/2024.2__NRFND_Complex_Conditions_Final_Report_%281%29.pdf?1729708433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> showing doctors killed patients with &ldquo;mental illness and addictions, unclear mental diagnoses and suffering fuelled by housing insecurity, poverty and social marginalization.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The New Atlantis published presentations and reports from Huyer, showing that for many possible violations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">law regulating assisted suicide<\/a>, he recommended nothing more than having an &ldquo;informal conversation&rdquo; or sending an &ldquo;educational&rdquo; or &ldquo;notice&rdquo; email.<\/p>\n<p>One-quarter of all assisted suicide mills in Ontario triggered at least one response from Huyer&rsquo;s office in 2023 about a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/two-harvard-hamas-students-hit-with-criminal-charges\/\" title=\"Two Harvard students face criminal charges\">legal compliance issue<\/a>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Raikin-2024-Huyer-presentation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">presentation<\/a> he gave in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>For patients not terminally ill, 15 percent of cases necessitated a compliance response, The New Atlantis reported. In some of these non-terminal cases, the doctor who killed the patient had no expertise in the cause of their suffering and did not discuss the case with an outside expert.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever doctors fail to comply with legislation that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/rp-pr\/other-autre\/ad-am\/p2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regulates<\/a> the way they kill patients, there are different response &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Raikin-2024-Huyer-presentation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">levels<\/a>&rdquo; &mdash; ascending from (1) &ldquo;informal conversation&rdquo; to (2) &ldquo;educational email&rdquo; to (3) &ldquo;notice email&rdquo; to (4) &ldquo;report to regulatory body&rdquo; to (5) &ldquo;report to police.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In his presentation, Huyer referenced 11,614 assisted suicide cases in Ontario from October 2018 to December 2022. Of these, there were 250 incident responses &mdash; including 35 &ldquo;notice emails&rdquo; and three instances of &ldquo;reporting to regulatory body.&rdquo; Eleven providers triggered responses more serious than a notice email.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023 alone, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Raikin-2024-Huyer-presentation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">178<\/a> incident responses (bringing the total to 428 since 2018). In this window of time, there were 17 &ldquo;notice emails&rdquo; and one instance of &ldquo;reporting to regulatory body.&rdquo; Five providers triggered three responses each.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear how many cases, if any, were reported to the police. But Huyer said in December of 2018 that, as of that time, no cases had gone to the police, according to The New Atlantis. In even the most shocking case by that point, where a provider brought the wrong drugs to kill a patient in his or her home, Huyer&rsquo;s office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/publications\/compliance-problems-maid-canada-leaked-documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referred<\/a> it to regulators.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was horrible. The family, and I&rsquo;m talking about what&rsquo;s public, so this isn&rsquo;t anything non-public, the family and the deceased person <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=j6M1El8YY7Y&amp;t=1390s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suffered<\/a> tremendously,&rdquo; Huyer said in a webinar, according to The New Atlantis. The doctor is still licensed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratemds.com\/doctor-ratings\/947207\/Dr-Eugenie-Tjan-Mississauga-ON.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">practice<\/a> medicine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to another slideshow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Raikin-2020-Huyer-presentation-v2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no cases<\/a> were reported to police from November 2018 to September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Physician-assisted suicide is hardly new in Canada. Since legalizing the action in 2016, the country&rsquo;s government healthcare system has been killing the most vulnerable to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/19\/canadas-euthanasia-culture-previews-whats-to-come-on-americas-deadly-medicare-trajectory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">save money<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The country tried to let its doctors kill patients for reasons like <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/12\/30\/universal-health-care-ends-with-the-government-telling-you-to-kill-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mental illness<\/a> in 2022, as The Federalist reported.
