Washington, who was also let go from a private sector role\u200c due to the incident, described the practice as widespread and suggested other FEMA \u200demployees faced similar pressures to avoid homes with political signs from either side.\u200c She expressed \u2063willingness to testify before\u200b Congress \u2062about the agency\u2019s conduct and indicated \u2062there was an ongoing \u200bproblem with how FEMA interacts with \u200bcommunities post-disaster. The incident \u200chas \u2063sparked significant criticism and\u200d calls\u200c for accountability regarding FEMA\u2019s disaster\u200b relief strategies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An employee who was terminated from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for ordering government workers to bypass homes of Trump supporters said she was simply following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kentucky-cop-placed-on-leave-for-praying-in-front-of-abortion-clinic-will-return-to-work\/\" title=\"Kentucky Cop Placed On Leave For Praying In Front Of Abortion Clinic Will Return To Work\">standard operating procedure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/exclusive-fema-official-ordered-relief-workers-to-skip-houses-with-trump-signs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that FEMA supervisor Marn&rsquo;i Washington had instructed staff to &ldquo;avoid homes advertising Trump&rdquo; while &ldquo;they canvassed Lake Placid, Florida to identify residents who could qualify for federal aid&rdquo; after Hurricane Milton tore through the region in early October.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Government employees told The Daily Wire that at least 20 homes with Trump signs or flags were skipped from the end of October and into November due to the guidance, meaning they were not given the opportunity to qualify for FEMA assistance,&rdquo; the outlet reported. &ldquo;Images shared with The Daily Wire show that houses were skipped over by the workers, who wrote in the government system messages such as: &lsquo;Trump sign no entry per leadership.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Washington was promptly fired from the agency, and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell condemned the conduct as &ldquo;a clear violation of FEMA&rsquo;s core values &amp; principles to help people regardless of their political affiliation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This was reprehensible,&rdquo; Criswell <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FEMA_Deanne\/status\/1855322116960170093\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. &ldquo;This employee has been terminated and we have referred the matter to the Office of Special Counsel.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Washington, however, who was also terminated from her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-has-the-fastest-job-growth-rate-in-the-nation-significantly-faster-than-national-average\/\" title=\"Florida Has The Fastest Job Growth Rate In The Nation, Significantly Faster Than National Average\">private sector job<\/a> at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-republican-under-fire-from-hoa-for-lets-go-brandon-christmas-lights\/\" title=\"Florida Republican Under Fire from HOA for \u2018Lets\u2019 Go Brandon\u2019 Christmas Lights\">property management company<\/a>, said in an interview with the Black Star Network <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Gu0o04TyLMA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a> late Monday night that she was just following FEMA&rsquo;s standard operating procedure.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;FEMA always preaches avoidance first and then de-escalation,&rdquo; Washington said. &ldquo;This is not isolated. This is a colossal event of avoidance, not just in the state of Florida, but you will find avoidance in the Carolinas. Senior leadership will lie to you and tell you that they do not know.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Washington said FEMA&rsquo;s guidelines recommend agency employees steer clear of disaster-stricken streets where crews are encountering trends in hostility.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Unfortunately, it just so happened that the political hostility that was encountered by my team,&rdquo; she said, &ldquo;&hellip; just so happened to have the Trump campaign signage.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If we are noticing on, for example, on Mary Street &hellip; we were greeted with unwelcomed arms or people are coming out with guns blazing or screaming at us, then that&rsquo;s a street we need to avoid altogether,&rdquo; Washington added.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>The fired FEMA employee just gave a thirty minute interview to Roland Martin on the Black Star Network. Washington&rsquo;s mention of a &ldquo;colossal event of avoidance&rdquo; seems to indicate that FEMA bypassing Trump supporters based on a perception of hostility is a widespread occurrence.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is insidious. The argument is that Trump supporters are &ldquo;more dangerous&rdquo; to the safety of FEMA workers, so they are avoided. That&rsquo;s a government social credit system. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zDg4G6c8jM\">https:\/\/t.co\/zDg4G6c8jM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; David Marcus (@BlueBoxDave) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BlueBoxDave\/status\/1856370273030754589?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 12, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In her interview with Roland Martin, Washington, who made clear she did not vote in this year&rsquo;s election because of her FEMA deployments, said she is also aware of teams that felt compelled to skip streets based on hostility from homes with Democrat yard signs too.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There is record of that in the past,&rdquo; Washington said. &ldquo;What you have to understand is everybody is not happy with FEMA.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Because if their applications are not approved, or something didn&rsquo;t go the way they expected it to go, sometimes when we come back around for another disaster, they don&rsquo;t want to see us, and they passionately let us know,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Washington welcomed an opportunity to testify before congressional investigators and said, &ldquo;I also have female employees that have called me and said they will come forward and they will tell their stories.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Those who have demonstrated hostility toward FEMA take &ldquo;issue &hellip; with FEMA&rsquo;s infrastructure and how they implement duty,&rdquo; Washington said. &ldquo;It does need to be revamped. &hellip; There is a problem with FEMA.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Washington said that FEMA scapegoated her to appease President-Elect Donald Trump, claiming that the agency had &ldquo;exploited,&rdquo; &ldquo;mishandled,&rdquo; and &ldquo;mistreated&rdquo; her.<\/p>\n<p>Last Saturday, House Republican Oversight Chairman James Comer of Kentucky sent a letter to FEMA <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/10\/us-news\/house-oversight-calls-on-fema-administrator-deanne-criswell-to-testify-over-workers-avoiding-florida-homes-with-trump-signs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inviting<\/a> the administrator to testify over the debacle.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In the wake of the recent major disasters that impacted Americans of all political persuasions, it is critical that FEMA adheres to its disaster relief mission,&rdquo; Comer said. <\/p>\n<p>FEMA fell under a firestorm of criticism this fall when Americans whose lives were upended by major storms struggled to receive federal relief from the disaster agency that has <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/03\/biden-harris-admin-claims-fema-is-out-of-money-heres-where-the-money-went\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent<\/a> hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars on illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season,&rdquo; Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2024\/10\/02\/press-gaggle-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-and-secretary-of-homeland-security-alejandro-mayorkas-en-route-greenville-sc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> reporters on Air Force One in October.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Helene had just flooded the southern United States with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/helene-and-other-storms-dumped-40-trillion-gallons-of-rain-on-the-south\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">40 trillion<\/a> gallons of water washing away <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2024\/10\/01\/lake-lure-helene-dam-flood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">entire<\/a> Appalachian towns.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/climo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">official<\/a> Atlantic hurricane season ends on Nov. 30.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist and the author of Social Justice Redux, a conservative newsletter on culture, health, and wellness.
