the lawfare trial against Trump, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KFaulders\/status\/1856351797310365965\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to Judge Juan Merchan on Sunday that his team needed more time to determine how to proceed after Trump&rsquo;s electoral landslide.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a842057e3c95536fbddb5a2039d3de26 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a842057e3c95536fbddb5a2039d3de26\"><\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;The People agree that these are unprecedented circumstances and that the arguments raised by defense counsel in correspondence to the People on Friday require careful consideration to ensure that any further steps in this proceeding appropriately balance the competing interests of (1) a jury verdict of guilt following trial that has the presumption of regularity; and (2) the Office of the President. Accordingly, the People respectfully request that the Court adjourn the upcoming scheduled dates to afford the People time to assess these recent developments, and set November 19, 2024 as a deadline for the People to advise the Court regarding our view of appropriate steps going forward,&rdquo; Colangelo&rsquo;s letter said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&rsquo;s lawyers submitted a similar request that the case be dismissed, with attorney Emil Bove arguing in an email to Merchan, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25289004-merchan-stay-decision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">court filings<\/a>, that a &ldquo;stay, and dismissal, are necessary to avoid unconstitutional impediments to President Trump&rsquo;s ability to govern.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Merchan gave prosecutors until Nov. 19 to make a decision. Sentencing is currently scheduled for Nov. 26.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was convicted in May by a New York jury on 34 charges related to a crime that, as my colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/31\/guilty-trump-verdict-will-keep-good-people-from-running-for-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tristan Justice<\/a> put it, &ldquo;nobody can quite articulate.&rdquo; The case was brought by left-wing District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who campaigned on nailing Trump once in office <em>after<\/em> the Department of Justice and Federal Elections Commission declined to pursue the case.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e9df34e445d61c612a4c7dd26c06b5ec fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e9df34e445d61c612a4c7dd26c06b5ec\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/05\/12-anti-trump-pundits-and-lawmakers-who-think-braggs-case-is-terrible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump<\/a> allegedly made payments to his then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, who then allegedly paid pornographer Stormy Daniels to stay quiet about an alleged affair. But Bragg alleges that the payments should have been classified as campaign expenses rather than a legal fee since the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/05\/alvin-braggs-trump-indictment-is-even-more-pathetic-and-partisan-than-we-could-have-imagined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">purchase<\/a> of negative press (which is legal) was done to influence the 2016 election. But Cohen <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/17\/3-moments-star-witness-michael-cohen-just-undermined-braggs-get-trump-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">admitted on the stand<\/a> that when the allegations of the affair surfaced in a 2011 blog post Trump was concerned about the story hurting his family.<\/p>\n<p>Biden&rsquo;s Department of Justice is also poised to drop its lawfare cases against Trump following the now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-cant-deny-responsibility-for-our-so-so-divided-nation\/\" title=\"Biden Can\u2019t Deny Responsibility For Our \u2018So, So Divided\u2019 Nation\">president-elect&#038;rsquo<\/a>;s victory.
