Tom Cotton: &#039;Moderate Democrats&#039; Is Code for &#039;Vulnerable Democrats&#039;\">closely contested race<\/a>. The Associated Press declared Gallego \u2062the \u200cvictor at 11:49\u200c p.m. ET\u200c on\u200d election night, reporting that \u2064he secured 50%\u2064 of the\u2064 vote compared to Lake&#8217;s\u2063 48% with 95% \u200dof ballots\u200c counted. Gallego&#8217;s \u200bvictory\u2063 is\u200c significant \u200bas he will\u2064 be \u200cArizona&#8217;s\u2063 first Latino senator. A former Marine and a Harvard graduate, Gallego has \u200crepresented Arizona&#8217;s 3rd Congressional\u200c District since 2015.\u200c His win comes as Democrats faced setbacks in other states, resulting \u2062in a Republican majority in the Senate. Kari\u200c Lake, who\u2063 previously ran \u2064for governor\u2062 in 2022, had a controversial campaign marked by her unsupported claims\u200d of election fraud. Despite early support from the\u2064 Republican Party, she\u2062 struggled to maintain favorable \u2062momentum throughout the election. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>The <em>Associated Press<\/em> called the race for Gallego at 11:49 p.m. ET p.m. Monday. With 95% of the ballots counted, Gallego led with 50% of the vote to Lake&rsquo;s 48%. Gallego will become Arizona&rsquo;s first Latino senator.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Senate candidates Rep. (Cheryl Evans\/Arizona Republic via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gallego&rsquo;s win is one bright spot for Democrats, who lost control of the Senate with Republicans defeating incumbents in Ohio, Montana, and Pennsylvania for a 53-seat majority.<\/p>\n<p>Gallego, 44, is a former United States Marine who served in the Iraq War. He also graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor&rsquo;s degree in international relations. She lost that race but didn&rsquo;t concede, citing election fraud, which has divided the Republican Party.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a bid for unity, the Senate Republicans&rsquo; campaign arm fell in line with then-former President Donald Trump and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/2853221\/kari-lake-evolution-outsider-institutional-favorite-nrsc-endorsement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> endorsed<\/a> Lake&rsquo;s candidacy in February. Warning signs about her candidacy persisted, however. In August, she<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/live-blog-posts\/kari-lake-wins-gop-primary-arizona-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> won her primary<\/a> with about 55% of the vote despite being the presumptive favorite all year. Underfunded Pinal County Sheriff<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/mark-lamb-reunite-arizona-gop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> Mark Lamb<\/a> got 39%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lake gained ground on Gallego in the final two weeks of voting. Six different polls published before the election by six different organizations collectively showed Gallego leading Lake by an average of 50% to 43%. The results were 1 percentage point tighter than what five <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">previous polls showed<\/a> a week ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gallego, who entered the race in January 2023, openly criticized Sinema before she decided to retire, arguing her record didn&rsquo;t represent the views of Arizona voters. In previous elections, Gallego campaigned as a &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GallegoforArizona\/videos\/10101277953587694\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">real progressive<\/a>,&rdquo; and he belonged, for eight years, to the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Gallego is no longer a member of the group, and he has embraced a more centrist identity.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gallego significantly outraised Lake, collecting a total that approached $54 million, according to federal election records.
