The adjustment involved a minor land exchange of just 1.34 acres, meaning neither state increased or decreased in size, according to the North Texas Municipal Water District. This border dispute dates back decades but gained momentum in August 2009 when zebra mussels were discovered at Lake Texoma, where Texas operates a water pump station. The presence of these invasive species raised concerns about whether the pump was located in Texas or Oklahoma; if it were in Oklahoma, operating it would breach federal laws against transporting zebra mussels across state lines. Further investigations confirmed that the pump was built within Texas boundaries in 1989 but became partially situated in Oklahoma after a boundary change made by both states in 2000.<\/p>\n
To resolve this issue, Texas proposed a new boundary to Oklahoma in 2021. On October 30th, the Red River Boundary Commission finalized an agreement that rectified the border situation and ensured that the pump station is entirely within Texas territory. “As Land Commissioner for Texas, I am proud to advocate for solutions that benefit our state,” stated Dawn Buckingham, emphasizing that this new boundary will secure water sources for millions of residents in northern Texas.<\/p>\n
The revised boundary is expected to safeguard approximately 30% of drinking water supplies for over two million people living there. Marvin Fuller from NTMWD highlighted that securing adequate water resources is crucial for their growing region and expressed gratitude for reaching an agreement on this matter.
