That margin may not seem too significant at first glance, but for two reasons, it&rsquo;s big.<\/p>\n<p>First, recent history shows Republicans not performing well in this part of Florida. In 2016, Osceola County broke for Hillary Clinton by a whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/elections\/2016\/results\/president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">25 points<\/a>. In 2020, Joe Biden carried it by a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/QFbRt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14 points<\/a>. Today, just four years later, it&rsquo;s effectively a tie, with a slight Republican edge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-41adc90c95f3da34c2f9428bfd4c56b6 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-41adc90c95f3da34c2f9428bfd4c56b6\"><\/div>\n<p>Second, roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/2019\/09\/27\/census-bureau-puerto-rican-population-in-orange-osceola-jumps-125-after-hurricane-maria\/#:~:text=The%20Puerto%20Rican%20population%20in,population%20swelled%207%25%20to%20209%2C151.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 in 3<\/a> county residents is Puerto Rican, as of 2020. In fact, Osceola County, more than half of which is Hispanic, represents the largest concentration of Puerto Ricans outside the U.S. island territory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That territory is basically a floating pile of trash &mdash; or so said insult comic Tony Hinchcliffe during Donald Trump&rsquo;s massive Madison Square Garden rally, among plenty of other jabs at everyone else&rsquo;s expense. But Trump&rsquo;s detractors took their cue, recycling their cries of Republican &ldquo;racism&rdquo; and claiming Democrats comprise the party of unity and decency.&nbsp;Puerto Rico thus became a defining part of Democrats&rsquo; closing message &mdash; that is, until Biden torpedoed it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On a Harris campaign call with Latino voters at the end of October, Biden went on a Puerto Rico tangent and ended up calling Trump supporters, also known as half the country, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/31\/after-years-of-dehumanizing-trumpers-as-nazi-deplorables-democrats-garbage-walkbacks-ring-hollow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">garbage<\/a>.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The only garbage I see floating out there is [Trump&rsquo;s] supporters,&rdquo; Biden said. Whoops.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e48f75ea815f74fef0eac478f1df1418 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e48f75ea815f74fef0eac478f1df1418\"><\/div>\n<p>Exactly one week later, the most Puerto Rican county in the states ramped up its support for Donald Trump by double digits. You know, you&rsquo;d think the Puerto Ricans &mdash; who fled their trash territory for a better life in the states, particularly after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/2019\/09\/27\/census-bureau-puerto-rican-population-in-orange-osceola-jumps-125-after-hurricane-maria\/#:~:text=The%20Puerto%20Rican%20population%20in,population%20swelled%207%25%20to%20209,151.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">devastation of Hurricane Maria<\/a> &mdash; wouldn&rsquo;t self-identify as &ldquo;garbage&rdquo; Trump voters. And yet.<\/p>\n<p>They aren&rsquo;t the only Hispanics to get behind Trump. If past is prologue, they&rsquo;re part of a larger trend and Republican realignment. While Trump earned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/12\/22\/506347254\/latinos-will-never-vote-for-a-republican-and-other-myths-about-hispanics-from-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">28 percent<\/a> of the Hispanic vote in 2016, his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-stakes-out-popular-position-as-republicans-try-to-navigate-abortion-politics-poll\/\" title=\"Poll: Trump Takes Firm Stance Amid GOP Abortion Debate\">share jumped<\/a> to 38 percent four years later. As the left-leaning Brookings Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/new-2020-voter-data-how-biden-won-how-trump-kept-the-race-close-and-what-it-tells-us-about-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> after the 2020 election: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The changing Hispanic vote is perhaps the most notable feature of the 2020 election. Although many observers believed that Mr. Trump&rsquo;s tough policies at the border would drive Hispanics away from his candidacy, his share of the Hispanic vote jumped by 10 points, from 28 to 38%.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If trends continue, Trump will be looking at another large jump this election.<\/p>\n<p>Osceola is just one county in Florida. But it&rsquo;s a majority-minority locale that used to break for Democrats but now backs Republicans, in a former swing state that&rsquo;s now ruby-red. Florida is so red now that Tuesday night it also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/05\/florida-voters-defeat-pro-abortion-marijuana-ballot-amendments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejected radical abortion and marijuana amendments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-97d5fa51cdde38845b606320c71cb11a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-97d5fa51cdde38845b606320c71cb11a\"><\/div>\n<p>Maybe the Osceola County results are indicative of nothing.
