Republican enthusiasm was\u2064 notably high, particularly in \u200ctraditionally \u2063Democratic counties. An early or sizable win for either candidate was believed to be an indicator of how they would perform for the rest of the night. <\/p>\n<p>Despite Harris&rsquo;s late-night win, Trump did much better in the state than he did four years ago when he lost by 10.2 points to President Joe Biden. In that race, the <em>Associated Press<\/em> declared Biden the winner 36 minutes after the polls closed. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/live-blog\/2024-election-campaign-live-updates-harris-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 ELECTIONS LIVE UPDATES: LATEST NEWS ON THE TRUMP-HARRIS PRESIDENTIAL RACE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Die-hard Trump supporters have been signaling since the summer that 2024 would be the year the state shifted from being blue to a battleground state. <\/p>\n<p>Two separate polls, one conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">conservative-leaning&#038;nbsp<\/a>;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/public_content\/politics\/partner_surveys\/election_2024_harris_48_trump_46_in_virginia_cruz_4_in_texas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rasmussen Reports<\/a>&nbsp;and another from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/2024\/09\/20\/new-survey-from-umw-center-for-leadership-and-media-studies-takes-closer-look-at-presidential-election-in-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the University of Mary Washington<\/a>, showed in the days leading up to the election that Trump had cut into Harris&rsquo;s lead and was within striking distance.  <\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Trump visited Salem, Va., one of the state&rsquo;s reddest corners.  He was welcomed by Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/glenn-youngkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Gov. Glenn Youngkin \">Gov. Glenn Youngkin <\/a>who introduced the former president with a 20-minute tribute to Trump&rsquo;s &ldquo;strength&rdquo; and a prayer. <\/p>\n<p>Trump, in a 90-minute speech, predicted victory in Virginia. He also told the crowd that they had a &ldquo;very sane, very solid governor&rdquo; in Youngkin.  <\/p>\n<p>Virginia has been reliably blue for Democrats at the presidential level for the past two decades but Republicans have scored victories in the state, most notably Youngkin&rsquo;s 2021 win over former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/terry-mcauliffe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Gov. Terry McAuliffe\">Gov.
