Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Gay Valimont. (AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The result was no surprise, with polling giving Gaetz a double-digit lead in the reddest district in Florida. Gaetz previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3128713\/matt-gaetz-mocks-mccarthy-primary-win\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">handily defeated<\/a> a Republican primary challenger, Aaron Dimmock, backed heavily by former Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) &mdash; a challenge seen as the biggest chance to unseat him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/live-blog\/2024-election-campaign-live-updates-harris-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>2024 ELECTIONS LIVE UPDATES: LATEST NEWS ON THE TRUMP-HARRIS PRESIDENTIAL RACE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gaetz also held a clear fundraising advantage &mdash; $6.4 million compared to Valimont&rsquo;s $1.4 million.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the deep redness of the district, Valimont was banking on an ethics investigation into Gaetz crippling him, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">gun violence prevention activist suggesting<\/a> that he could be removed even in the event of a victory.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If he wins, watch for him to be expelled in November or December, sparking a special election,&rdquo; Valimont <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/704275-can-gay-valimont-defeat-the-eternally-controversial-matt-gaetz-in-floridas-reddest-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">told<\/a> <em>Florida Politics<\/em>. &ldquo;We are also prepared for that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for Valimont, her predicted &ldquo;biggest upset in the country&rdquo; didn&rsquo;t come to fruition.<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz will now proceed to his fifth term as representative for Florida&rsquo;s 1st Congressional District.
