In September 2024, the \u200bagency released its 2023 crime data but failed to disclose that it had \u200drevised earlier figures for 2021 and 2022, concealing \u2062an increase in violent\u200b crime during those \u200dyears. This revision comes just ahead of an election\u200b where crime\u200c has been a pivotal issue, leading to accusations that the \u200bFBI is intentionally hiding negative data that \u2064contradicts claims of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/whats-behind-the-rise-of-violent-crime-in-washington-dc\/\" title=\"Causes of increasing violent crime in Washington, DC\">declining crime rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. James Comer, chair \u2064of the House Oversight\u2064 and Reform Committee, has demanded explanations from the FBI about these revisions, particularly as the\u2062 media and politicians have relied on\u200d the \u200cearlier, misleading data to support\u200b their narratives. Reports from the\u2064 FBI stated that\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-was-right-fbi-quietly-makes-stunning-admission-that-its-crime-statistics-were-very-wrong\/\" title=\"Trump Was Right: FBI Quietly Makes &#039;Stunning&#039; Admission That Its Crime Statistics Were Very Wrong\">violent crime decreased<\/a> by 1.7% in 2022;\u2062 however, revised figures showed a 4.9% increase. These \u2064discrepancies highlight the agency&#8217;s inconsistent reporting and its failure to be \u2063transparent about significant changes in crime statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Comer has called for all communications between the FBI and the White House regarding the crime statistics, emphasizing\u200c that\u200d the FBI&#8217;s lack\u200d of\u2062 clear communication regarding its\u2064 own data is troubling. In the broader context, there&#8217;s a\u200d concern that the agency&#8217;s methodology for collecting and reporting \u200ccrime data is flawed, as\u200b it relies on \u2062estimates from police departments that may not\u2064 report fully, making \u200bit imperative to \u200drecognize\u2064 the difference between reported and \u200dtotal crime.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The FBI has a big transparency problem. For a year, the media has been using the FBI&rsquo;s estimates of reported crime to claim that crime has been falling. When the FBI released its numbers for 2023 in September 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearinvestigations.com\/articles\/2024\/10\/16\/stealth_edit_fbi_quietly_revises_violent_crime_stats_1065396.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it hid that it had revised<\/a> its earlier crime data for 2021 and 2022, hiding the increase in 2022 and that there had been a net increase in crime over 2022 and 2023. Just days before an election in which crime has been a major issue, the FBI continues to hide the revisions.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, House Oversight and Reform Committee Chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/House-letter-on-FBI-data.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demanded<\/a> that the FBI explain why it hid this increase even as Democrats and the media have been citing the claimed drop to bolster their election chances.<\/p>\n<p>In responses to reporters over the past couple of weeks, the FBI has claimed: &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2024\/10\/fbi-finally-responds-to-the-real-clear-investigations-research-that-shows-the-fbi-secretly-changed-2022-crime-data-from-a-drop-to-an-increase-kansas-city-star-judging-from-the-ridiculous-answer-th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The FBI stands behind each of our Crime in the Nation publications. In 2022, the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">estimated violent crime rate decreased 1<\/a>.7 percent from 2021<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>But the FBI&rsquo;s revised numbers <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2024\/10\/the-revised-fbi-crime-data-reveals-that-it-originally-missed-1699-murders-in-2022-given-that-almost-all-murders-are-reported-how-does-the-fbi-miss-that-many-murders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are clear<\/a>. The FBI originally reported in October 2023 that the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-u-s-cities-that-struggled-with-violent-crime-in-2022\/\" title=\"5 U.S. Cities That Struggled With Violent Crime in 2022\">reported violent crimes<\/a> fell from <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Table_1_Crime_in_the_United_States_by_Volume_and_Rate_per_100000_Inhabitants_2003-2022.xlsx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,253,716 in 2021 to 1,232,428 in 2022 &mdash; a 1.7 percent drop<\/a>. The numbers released later, in September 2023, showed a rise from <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Table_1_Crime_in_the_United_States_by_Volume_and_Rate_per_100000_Inhabitants_2004-2023.xlsx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,197,930 in 2021 to 1,256,671 in 2022 &mdash; a 4.9 percent increase<\/a>. That is a 6.6-point swing.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI didn&rsquo;t explain the reason for the changed numbers in 2022 in <a href=\"https:\/\/elements.visualcapitalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/UCR_Summary_of_Crime_in_-Nation_2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their report<\/a> nor in their <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2024\/10\/fbi-finally-responds-to-the-real-clear-investigations-research-that-shows-the-fbi-secretly-changed-2022-crime-data-from-a-drop-to-an-increase-kansas-city-star-judging-from-the-ridiculous-answer-th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responses<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2024\/oct\/17\/new-fbi-data-shows-crime-increased-even-as-biden-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the media<\/a>. As a former editor for USA Today, David Mastio, <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2024\/10\/fbi-finally-responds-to-the-real-clear-investigations-research-that-shows-the-fbi-secretly-changed-2022-crime-data-from-a-drop-to-an-increase-kansas-city-star-judging-from-the-ridiculous-answer-th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> about the FBI&rsquo;s response to inquiry: &ldquo;Here&rsquo;s what I&rsquo;ve learned in decades of covering Washington: When bad news is false, agency press people go out of their way to make it crystal clear that reports are definitely not true. When bad news is true, agency press people spew a wall of fog and bury you under an avalanche of distractions or in this case, contradictions.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The FBI&rsquo;s unwillingness to explicitly acknowledge what their own data clearly shows gives the legacy media an excuse for not recognizing the obvious increase in crime.<\/p>\n<p>(The change in the estimated reported violent crime rate, which adjusts for the population changes, is similar and went from a drop of 2.1 percent to an increase of 4.5 percent.)<\/p>\n<p>The increase in 2022 is greater than the FBI&rsquo;s current estimated drop in reported violence in 2023. The revised numbers show that there were 20,537 more reported violent crimes in 2023 than in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI ignored mentioning these revisions in <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2024\/10\/the-revised-fbi-crime-data-reveals-that-it-originally-missed-1699-murders-in-2022-given-that-almost-all-murders-are-reported-how-does-the-fbi-miss-that-many-murders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">its September 2024 press release<\/a>. The FBI&rsquo;s &ldquo;Summary of Crime in the Nation&rdquo; report contained a one sentence footnote on page 11 that vaguely <a href=\"https:\/\/elements.visualcapitalist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/UCR_Summary_of_Crime_in_-Nation_2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stated<\/a>: &ldquo;The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fbi-fudges-violent-crime-stats-to-hide-55-rise-under-biden\/\" title=\"FBI Fudges Violent Crime Stats To Hide 55% Rise Under Biden\">2022 violent crime rate<\/a> has been updated for inclusion in CIUS, 2023.&rdquo; The footnote failed to mention that the numbers increased. One only sees the change by downloading the FBI&rsquo;s new crime data and comparing it to the file released last year.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The FBI&rsquo;s failure to accurately report crime data and be transparent regarding revisions is unacceptable,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/House-letter-on-FBI-data.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notes<\/a> Comer&rsquo;s letter to the FBI. Comer demanded &ldquo;all documents and communications between the FBI and the White House related to the 2021, 2022, and 2023 Crime in the Nation statistics.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Better Data<\/h2>\n<p>The FBI doesn&rsquo;t simply count the number of crimes reported to police. Some police departments only partially report their data, and others don&rsquo;t report any data. The FBI doesn&rsquo;t assume that there were no crimes for those departments; it makes guesses, and how it does so can change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, there is better data on crime than the FBI&rsquo;s. It&rsquo;s important to distinguish reported crime from total crime.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, we have known that most crimes aren&rsquo;t reported to the police. So the U.S. Department of Justice set up the Bureau of Justice Statistics National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), which surveys 240,000 people each year about whether they have been victims of crime. The NCVS provides a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/13\/opinion\/democrats-hide-the-rise-in-violent-crime-with-tricky-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">measure of total crime<\/a> that includes both reported and unreported crime.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/13\/us-news\/violent-crime-has-increased-doj-report-says-after-david-muir-disputed-trumps-claim-that-crime-is-through-the-roof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 NCVS<\/a>, released in mid-September, tell a very different story. From 2019, before Covid, to 2023, NCVS shows a 19 percent increase in rape, robbery, and aggravated assaults. Over just the course of the Biden administration, there was an incredible <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2024\/09\/new-bureau-of-justice-statistics-crime-data-just-released-violent-crime-rape-robbery-and-aggravated-assault-soaring-under-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">55.4 percent increase<\/a>, though there were many issues that were unique to 2020 due to Covid.<\/p>\n<p>The media and Democrats have focused solely on the FBI data, presumably because they show the desired pattern in crime. But when the FBI secretly revised its data, corporate media refused to run stories acknowledging that the headlines they ran over the last year were wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The politicization of the FBI is aiding Democrats in making these claims.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      John R.
