This implies that their research should be exempt from scrutiny, even when proven incorrect, as it affects their feelings and professional integrity. It seems they are using a victim mentality to avoid the necessary discourse inherent in the scientific method, particularly when advocating for political action based on their findings. The Guardian’s article titled “We have emotions too: Climate scientists respond to attacks on objectivity” reflects a notable display of self-pity, where climate scientists express frustration over what they perceive as unfair criticism following a controversial survey published by The Guardian last May. These self-proclaimed defenders of climate science demand unquestioned acceptance of their forecasts and lament about perceived injustices when faced with skepticism.

The article portrays these professionals not as resilient researchers capable of addressing critique but rather as fragile individuals overwhelmed by public doubt. Instead of engaging with legitimate criticisms—such as failed models or predictions—they resort to emotional appeals, claiming that harsh public feedback poses a threat comparable to climate change itself. They even argue that “climate anxiety” is worsened by online negativity from skeptics.

A recurring theme in The Guardian piece is the portrayal of public scrutiny as an attack from privileged individuals, which serves as a rhetorical tactic to frame dissenters not just as misguided but morally wrong. By depicting critics as oppressors harming marginalized scientists, the focus shifts away from evaluating whether climate models withstand scrutiny and instead centers on protecting scientists’ feelings.

The Nature article reinforces this narrative of victimhood by describing scientists burdened not only by climate change’s existential threat but also by public hostility. Many advocates fled social media platform X for the safety of Nature Climate Change when faced with skepticism too challenging for them emotionally.

These scientists seem more interested in finding comfort than defending their theories against critique; they prioritize shielding themselves from skeptics’ harsh words over rigorously validating their claims. Meanwhile, historical data shows that most prominent science-based climate predictions over the past three decades have failed to materialize.

To those complaining about “abuse” on X: it’s time to toughen up. If you can’t defend your models against valid criticism—especially given past failures—it may indicate uncertainty about your conclusions rather than confidence in them.
