The term &#8220;Sedition Caucus&#8221;\u200c became \u200cassociated with certain Republican officials who opposed\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/congress-announces-1-7-trillion-spending-bill-to-avoid-government-shutdown\/\" title=\"Congress Announces .7 Trillion Spending Bill to Avoid Government Shutdown\">certifying electoral votes<\/a> in 2020 due\u200d to questionable election \u200cpractices\u200c in swing states.\u200b In contrast, a\u200b group of vulnerable \u200dDemocrats in \u2062Congress has \u200dbeen scrutinized for\u2063 their reluctance to commit to \u2064certifying \u200da potential victory \u200bfor \u2063Donald Trump\u200b in future elections. While nine \u2062vulnerable Democrats have stated that they would\u200b accept\u2064 the election results if\u2063 Trump \u2062wins, others have not responded to inquiries about their \u200dstance. <\/p>\n<p>Historically, \u2062Democrats \u200bhave insisted that all elected officials vow to certify election results to safeguard democracy. However, after media scrutiny\u200c of Republican lawmakers who expressed hesitance to affirm election results, Democrats appear\u2064 to \u200cbe more open to questioning certifications now that a Trump victory seems plausible. Notably, Rep. Jamie Raskin acknowledged he would \u2063accept\u2062 a\u2063 Trump win only if the\u2064 election were &#8220;free, fair,\u200b and honest.&#8221; This change in tone\u2063 reflects \u2062a shifting attitude\u2062 among\u200d Democrats amid concerns of potential election\u2063 fraud,\u2062 showcasing a double standard \u2064compared \u2063to their previous strict accountability rhetoric regarding Republican actions.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In the last four years, the left has gone bananas after some Republican officials voted in 2020 against certifying electoral votes from swing states with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wi-congressman-wants-answers-on-2200-duplicate-ballots\/\" title=\"WI Congressman Wants Answers On 2,200 Duplicate Ballots\">legally dubious election practices<\/a>. Wikipedia <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sedition_Caucus#:~:text=In%20American%20politics%2C%20%22Sedition%20Caucus,in%20the%202020%20presidential%20election.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dedicated an entire page<\/a> to these Republicans, slandering them as the &ldquo;Sedition Caucus.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>So what do you call a cohort of vulnerable Democrats in Congress that will not commit to certifying a potential Trump victory? The Federalist inquired with a slew of Democrats listed as some of the most electorally vulnerable by The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/us\/elections\/house-election-swing-districts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Times<\/a> whether they would &ldquo;accept the results of the presidential election if Donald Trump wins?&rdquo; and whether, if elected, they would &ldquo;commit to certifying the results of the presidential election if Donald Trump wins?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Nine vulnerable Democrats responded to The Federalist with some variation of &ldquo;yes.&rdquo; Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, who notably has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/19\/us\/politics\/casey-pennsylvania-senate-ad-trump.html\">touting his support<\/a> of Trump-era policies in recent campaign ads, told The Federalist that &ldquo;Members of Congress have a duty to preserve the sanctity of our elections and protect the sacred right to vote. After the states certify their election results, I will vote in favor of certifying those results in Congress to pave the way for the next administration.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Inquiries to Colorado Rep. Yadira Caraveo, New Mexico Rep. Gabe Vasquez, Washington Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, and Pennsylvania Rep. Susan Wild went unanswered. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/23\/opinion\/trump-big-lie-elections.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democrats<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2022\/12\/threat-democracy-still-congress\/672447\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insisted<\/a> for the last four years that all elected officials <em>must<\/em> promise to certify an election if they don&rsquo;t want to be &ldquo;threats to democracy.&rdquo; In 2001, 2005, and 2017, House Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/sep\/21\/lee-zeldin\/house-democrats-have-objected-presidential-electio\/\">objected <\/a>to presidential election certifications. After she lost in 2016, Hillary Clinton went on an endless world tour insisting the election she lost was &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/article\/2024\/may\/31\/can-we-compare-republicans-2020-voter-fraud-claims\/\">stolen<\/a>&rdquo; by &ldquo;Russian influence.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>NBC News ran an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/republican-elise-stefanik-wont-commit-certifying-2024-election-results-rcna132700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> in January headlined &ldquo;GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik won&rsquo;t commit to certifying the 2024 election results.&rdquo; CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/12\/politics\/video\/sen-markwayne-mullin-election-results-harris-trump-democrats-gop-presidential-race-tapper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">host<\/a> Pamela Brown was nearly brought to tears after Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullen said he wants to ensure that each state&rsquo;s election administration is conducted properly, with Brown questioning why Mullen would want to &ldquo;look at&rdquo; the results &mdash; regardless of who wins &mdash; before certifying them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/09\/30\/congress-certification-election-mike-johnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Washington Pos<\/a>t framed Speaker Mike Johnson&rsquo;s September comment that he would accept the results if the election were &ldquo;free, fair, and safe&hellip;&rdquo; as part of a larger effort by the right to claim the election was &ldquo;stolen&rdquo; and to &ldquo;undermine the results&rdquo; if Trump loses this go-around. <\/p>\n<p>All of these pieces had one goal: to smear Republicans as &ldquo;threats&rdquo; to &ldquo;democracy&rdquo; for questioning whether the election was administered fairly and in accordance with each state&rsquo;s respective laws. Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensforethics.org\/reports-investigations\/crew-investigations\/election-certification-under-threat\/\">new bar<\/a> set by the left, elected officials <em>must<\/em> commit to certifying election results, no matter the outcome and prior to the race&rsquo;s conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>But now that Vice President Kamala Harris isn&rsquo;t favored to win the election, Democrats and their propaganda press allies are losing their appetite for &ldquo;accountability&rdquo; via certifying an election victory for Trump. It&rsquo;s why corporate media didn&rsquo;t go ape when a slew of Democrats recently told Axios they would only accept the election if it were &ldquo;free and fair&rdquo; before claiming Trump would play dirty. <\/p>\n<p>House Oversight Committee ranking Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/13\/after-screeching-about-j6-and-democracy-for-years-top-dems-threaten-not-to-certify-a-trump-election-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told Axios<\/a> he would &ldquo;obviously accept&rdquo; a Trump win <em>if<\/em> it were a &ldquo;free, fair and honest election,&rdquo; also claiming that Trump &ldquo;is doing whatever he can to try to interfere with the process, whether we&rsquo;re talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/top-dems-threaten-not-to-certify-a-trump-election-victory\/\" title=\"Top Dems Threaten Not To Certify A Trump Election Victory\">manipulating electoral college counts<\/a> in Nebraska or manipulating vote count in Georgia or imposing other kinds of impediments.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Democrat senior chief deputy whip Rep. Jan Schakowsky told Axios she doesn&rsquo;t trust Trump and that &ldquo;we would have to, in any election &hellip; make sure that all the rules have been followed.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>But for years Democrats have tried to bully Republicans into not only ceding all questions about election administration but also into accepting the results of an election that hasn&rsquo;t even taken place. Those who dare scrutinize election integrity are smeared as election &ldquo;deniers&rdquo; &mdash; a strategy to stifle legitimate concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have even used the Justice Department to force Americans into lockstep on election integrity, with Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/27\/garland-makes-an-example-of-j6-protesters-to-shut-up-anyone-else-who-might-question-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Merrick Garland<\/a> going so far to boast that his office prosecuted nearly 1,500 Americans for protesting the certification of the 2020 election. Garland warned lawfare would continue to be employed by anyone who dares question the administration of the upcoming election.<\/p>\n<p>But keeping in line with his two-tiered system of justice, Garland is mum now that Democrats refuse to commit to preemptively certifying the results of an election.<\/p>\n<p>As Harris&rsquo; chances of a definitive victory continue to wane, Democrats are setting the stage to challenge the results of the election &mdash; not because they care about free and fair election administration, but because they care about denying Republican electoral wins by any means necessary.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
