Dr. Alfie Goodwin \u200dcriticized Harris for implementing truancy policies \u200bthat led to the prosecution of parents, questioning\u200b how Harris \u2063could \u200didentify as a\u2062 black woman\u2064 while contributing to the \u2064separation of black\u200d families. Goodwin highlighted that the first \u200cmention of \u2062Harris to her was linked to \u2063these crackdowns, leading to distrust among \u200bsome voters.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 segment also featured Valerie Martin, \u2064who stated flatly that &#8220;we all know she\u2019s not black,&#8221; \u200cindicating a broader \u200bconcern within\u2064 some black communities about Harris&#8217;s\u2064 mixed heritage and\u200c her relevance to their \u200cstruggles. These sentiments reflect a wider \u200bhesitance\u2063 among some\u200b black voters to support Harris during her 2020 presidential campaign, fueled by the perception that her experiences as the daughter of Jamaican\u200d and Indian immigrants differ from the historic challenges faced by African Americans.<\/p>\n<p>Commentators and activists have criticized Harris \u2063for not presenting a \u200cclear agenda that\u2062 specifically addresses the needs of black Americans, further\u200b complicating her relationship with \u2064this\u2063 voter\u200c base. \u2063The ongoing discussion\u2064 around her identity and policies continues \u200bto surface, especially amidst political rivalries, such as comments made\u200c by former President Trump about \u2064her racial identity. the \u2064conversation underscores the complex intersection of race,\u200c politics, and identity in contemporary America.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Black voters shocked MSNBC host Alex Wagner when they questioned Vice President Kamala Harris&rsquo; authenticity.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The first time I ever heard the name Kamala Harris,&rdquo; said a woman named Dr. Alfie Goodwin, &ldquo;it was in association to locking up parents for truancy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I really didn&rsquo;t understand how this person claims to be a black woman, but yet she&rsquo;s locking up black women and black men and separating families.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Gold MSNBC segment on Philly voters: &#8220;At the end of the day, I don&#8217;t think Kamala has what it takes to go up against Putin &mdash; and go up against these other presidents that are built for this&hellip; I want my president to feel secure, and manly, and ABOUT IT.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3SI4elmOG0\">pic.twitter.com\/3SI4elmOG0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; johnny maga (@_johnnymaga) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_johnnymaga\/status\/1848909736525135887?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 23, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Harris made her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/education\/commentary\/kamala-harris-criminalized-and-prosecuted-parents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crackdowns<\/a> on truancy as a local prosecutor in San Francisco a top pitch to voters while running for California attorney general. When she was inaugurated following her first statewide election, Harris made clear, &ldquo;We are putting parents on notice. If you fail in your responsibility to your kids, we are going to work to make sure you face the full force and consequences of the law.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Harris was attacked for her aggressive initiatives on truancy in 2019 when she mounted her first run for president. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The dispute over the truancy policy, which was later expanded statewide with Harris&rsquo;s support, illustrates a broader issue for her,&rdquo; Vox <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/2019\/2\/7\/18202084\/kamala-harris-truancy-prosecutor-president-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> just weeks after Harris announced her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fact-check-new-york-times-columnist-says-kamala-harris-has-clear-potential-as-a-national-leader\/\" title=\"FACT CHECK: New York Times Columnist Says Kamala Harris \u2018Has Clear Potential as a National Leader\u2019\">presidential primary campaign<\/a>. &ldquo;Policies that may have seemed acceptable or even laudable a decade ago face more questions today as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">criminal justice reform<\/a> has taken off, especially among Democrats, particularly in the wake of Black Lives Matter.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Harris would go on to struggle with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/can-abortion-alone-help-biden-carry-black-voters-in-2024\/\" title=\"Can abortion alone help Biden carry black voters in 2024?\">courting black voters<\/a> throughout her party&rsquo;s 2020 presidential primary for reasons some voters would reiterate on MSNBC Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When she was sworn into the Senate, it was as the first American Indian,&rdquo; Goodwin said, met with a &ldquo;Thank you!&rdquo; from a nearby listener. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s fine! We don&rsquo;t care,&rdquo; Goodwin added, with MSNBC cutting to another voter named Valerie Martin who said, &ldquo;We all know she&rsquo;s not black!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Let&rsquo;s understand that,&rdquo; Martin said. &ldquo;We are all clear of that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;But my point of view,&rdquo; she added, is &ldquo;she&rsquo;s already been there. She&rsquo;s in office right now.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Black voters had resisted flocking to Harris in 2020, citing her heritage as Jamaican and Indian instead of African American. The Washington Post&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/a-few-liberal-activists-challenged-kamala-harriss-black-authenticity-the-presidents-son-amplified-their-message\/2019\/07\/07\/f46c4b8a-9ccd-11e9-85d6-5211733f92c7_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;in 2019 on left-wing influencers who explained her lineage as the reason behind black resistance to backing a Harris candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You don&rsquo;t voluntarily immigrate into a community that is supposedly segregated, and then claim the struggles of people who have been here chained to chattel slavery for multiple generations,&rdquo; one activist named Antonio Moore said on his radio show. &ldquo;Kamala Harris does not have a black agenda.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Moore is a leader of a tiny but outspoken movement called American Descendants of Slavery, or ADOS, which has been rattling Democratic strategists and enraging some liberal black leaders by calling for a reimagining of black identity that replaces skin color with historical lineage as the defining characteristic,&rdquo; the Post reported. &ldquo;Descendants of American slaves, they say, should not be seen as part of broader groups like &lsquo;people of color&rsquo; or &lsquo;minorities,&rsquo; because their historical situation is completely different.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Trump was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/02\/heres-how-the-media-are-lying-right-now-trump-and-the-nabj-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hounded<\/a> by the press after referencing similar sentiments in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/blog\/transcripts\/trump-addresses-national-association-of-black-journalists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remarks<\/a> at a conference of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) this summer.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black,&rdquo; Trump said in Chicago. &ldquo;Is she Indian or is she black?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As The Federalist has <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/22\/kamala-harris-is-a-race-hoaxer\/\">reported<\/a>, the Harris campaign has exploited the most racist impulses of identity politics to gin up faux outrage against Trump. In August, the Democrat&rsquo;s campaign ridiculed a Trump stop in the Detroit suburb of Howell, Michigan, a city in a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">reliably red county&#038;nbsp<\/a>;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/2020-election\/results\/michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surrounded<\/a>&nbsp;by blue votes that Republicans obviously hope to flip.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&rsquo;s event on &ldquo;crime and safety,&rdquo; however,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4837311-trump-rally-michigan-harris-criticizes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to the Harris campaign, wasn&rsquo;t just a &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kamala-harris-is-a-race-hoaxer\/\" title=\"Kamala Harris Is A Race Hoaxer\">dog whistle&#038;rdquo<\/a>; from the Republican, but a &ldquo;bullhorn.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa Bradley, the Harris campaign&rsquo;s Michigan communications director, condemned Trump for &ldquo;choosing to rally in a town that was historically known as &lsquo;the KKK capital of Michigan.&#8217;&rdquo; A reporter asked Trump about the charge of white supremacy, citing the presence of area extremists at the tail end of the event. The former president responded by asking the reporter a question of his own.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Who was here in 2021?&rdquo; Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Joe Biden,&rdquo; she answered.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Thank you,&rdquo; Trump responded before walking off.<\/p>\n<p>Trump doubled his share of the black vote from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2018\/08\/09\/an-examination-of-the-2016-electorate-based-on-validated-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6 percent<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ropercenter.cornell.edu\/how-groups-voted-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12 perc<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ropercenter.cornell.edu\/how-groups-voted-2020\">ent<\/a>&nbsp;in the last election, and some polls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/one-four-us-black-men-under-50-support-trump-president-naacp-poll-finds-2024-09-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggest<\/a> the Republican president could do so again this year.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist and the author of Social Justice Redux, a conservative newsletter on culture, health, and wellness.
