However, the interview\u200d quickly shifted focus to discussions about gender and &#8220;girl\u200c power,&#8221; which dominated approximately ten minutes of the conversation. Jackson pressed Harris on \u2064whether the American public \u200dis ready\u2064 for a female president, particularly one who is a woman of color, to which Harris confidently responded that they are indeed ready,\u2064 emphasizing the need for a \u2062president \u2064who addresses everyone&#8217;s\u2062 needs regardless of gender or race.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson continued \u200cto refocus the discussion on gender, asking why Harris has been reluctant to discuss the\u2063 historic nature\u200b of her\u200b candidacy and \u200dprobing whether sexism influences her campaign&#8217;s support among men.\u2063 Although Harris deflected these questions politely, the interviewer persisted, seemingly framing the conversation around issues of sexism rather than\u2063 on Harris&#8217;s political platform \u2063or\u2064 qualifications.<\/p>\n<p>The article critiques this approach, arguing that such\u200d line of questioning undermines Harris&#8217;s candidacy by emphasizing her gender and race\u200b over her policies and professional abilities. Tuesday for a little girl talk. Both wore power pantsuits. It&rsquo;s what professional gals in D.C. are wearing this season. Shoulder pads are back, by the way.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, it was an interview about how Harris would handle the presidency if elected, but Jackson got mired down in a long discussion about girl power. A good 10 minutes was spent on gender, and the undertone hinted that maybe Americans are not sophisticated enough to handle a female president.<\/p>\n<p>It has been pretty rare to see Harris pressed on questions during interviews, especially at NBC, a certified member of the Harris Fan Club. To her credit, Jackson did press Harris, but not on a revelatory issue; on the girl thing. She asked four questions about her sex, and each time Harris politely deflected the question, downplaying the topic.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Back in 2019 &hellip; you said that the elephant in the room was whether the country was ready for a woman and a woman of color to be president,&rdquo; Hallie said. &ldquo;So, let me ask you, as you sit here today, do you think the country is ready now for a woman and a woman of color to be president?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Absolutely,&rdquo; Harris said, adding that it is important to be &ldquo;not only turning the page, but closing the chapter on an era that suggests that Americans are divided.&rdquo; She said that regardless of their race, gender, or age, the American people want a president who focuses on their needs.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson tried again.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You&rsquo;ve been reluctant to talk about the historic nature of your candidacy on the campaign trail. Why is that?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>And again.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There is a big gender gap in this race. Fewer men support you right now than they did President Biden. Some of your allies have suggested there&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/538\/sexism-impact-harriss-presidential-campaign\/story?id=112444102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexism<\/a> at play. I wonder, do you think there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2024\/oct\/20\/kamala-harris-has-a-problem-with-men-will-misogyny-cost-her-the-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexism<\/a> at play here?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>And yet again.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Do you not see <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7014464\/kamala-harris-trump-racism-sexism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexism<\/a> as a factor in this race at all?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>There it is. The <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4948078-harris-nbc-interview-sexism-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexism<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefulcrum.us\/election-2024\/kamala-harris-sexism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">card<\/a>. Don&rsquo;t you feel bad America, you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalaffairs.org.au\/australianoutlook\/diplomatic-double-standards-the-sexism-a-president-kamala-harris-would-face\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexist<\/a> bunch of man-voters?<\/p>\n<p>Jackson is the true <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/362929\/kamala-harris-maga-racism-sexism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexist<\/a> here, making it all about Harris&rsquo; sex and sometimes color. If she asked questions like that in any other job interview, it would be employment discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine interviewing for a job in a sales position (one could argue the presidency is partly sales). There you are in your best pantsuit. You really need this job. And the interviewer goes down this path.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;So, you&rsquo;re a woman. Are people mean to you? Do you think our company is ready for a woman of color?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Yuck. Run, Kamala! You don&rsquo;t want that job.<\/p>\n<p>It is hard to believe that Jackson, herself a woman, felt comfortable pressing on these questions. Has she not been in the work world long enough to understand the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-viral-video-demonstrates-depressing-state-of-modern-dating\/\" title=\"Watch: Viral Video Exposes Sad Reality of &#039;Modern Dating\">male-female dynamic<\/a> is usually comfortable, rewarding, and an opportunity to bring many perspectives to the table?<\/p>\n<p>Has she not cracked open a history book and read about the many female leaders? Queen Elizabeth; Margaret Thatcher; Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress in 1916; Nellie Tayloe Ross, the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bob-mcmanus-krazy-kat-denies-crimes-a-problem-but-hillary-clinton-lets-the-truth-slip\/\" title=\"Bob McManus: Krazy Kat Denies Crime\u2019s a Problem \u2014 But Hillary Clinton Lets the Truth Slip\">elected female governor<\/a> in 1925; Hattie Caraway, the first woman elected to the Senate in 1932. The list is so much longer.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson is not interviewing here; she is building a narrative. <\/p>\n<p>Harris never has to cry <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/harris-male-voters-sexism-trump-support-obama-bcf8dbcce4700ba24725ca178f7753b0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexism,<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/msnbc-opinion\/trumps-misogynistic-attacks-kamala-harris-arent-even-worst-part-rcna169141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">media<\/a> does it for her. Story after story for months, <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/184094\/kamala-harriss-secret-weapons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexism<\/a> has been pushed as the reason Harris may not win.<\/p>\n<p>Please, stop degrading women and our boundless potential with this tired pity party. In the United States, opportunity is there for all. But you have to work for it.<\/p>\n<p>Mabey Harris doesn&rsquo;t know how. We are dealing with a woman who has been given so much. A privileged, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">upper-middle-class upbringing<\/a>, two educated parents, a college education. It is more than many have had, even if she tries to play it as a near-hard luck story. Harris was gifted the vice presidency because President Biden was looking for a woman of color to fill the role. That&rsquo;s pretty <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2024\/07\/racist-misogynist-online-disinformation-is-being-used-against-kamala-harris-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The candidacy for the presidency was also handed to her with little effort. The trick now is to offer something the American people want. <\/p>\n<p>But if it doesn&rsquo;t work out, don&rsquo;t blame <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2024\/07\/racist-sexist-attacks-kamala-harris\/679232\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Beth Brelje is an elections correspondent for The Federalist.
