In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and\u200c U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe, Grassley expressed \u2062concern over the \u2063four-month period before Eric James Rennert was \u2062indicted for making violent\u200c threats against Judge \u200cCannon, with \u2062the threats reportedly \u2062beginning\u2062 in May \u200d2024 and the indictment occurring in September \u20642024. Judge Cannon\u200b had previously dismissed charges against former President\u200b Trump related to classified \u2064information handling, leading to increased \u200cscrutiny \u200dand pressure \u200bon\u2062 her from Democrats demanding faster legal proceedings. The threats against her intensified\u200c as\u200d she faced pressure to expedite the prosecution\u2062 of Trump. Grassley highlighted the \u2064urgency of the situation and the apparent inaction\u200d by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-red-wave-of-conservative-women-elected-to-congress\/\" title=\"The Red Wave of Conservative Women Elected to Congress\">law enforcement<\/a> \u2064in addressing\u200b the threats against a \u2062sitting judge.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee is demanding an explanation from the Department of Justice (DOJ) on why a potential assassin was able to threaten U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon for months.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa., sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/grassley_to_doj_fbi_sdf_-_judge_aileen_cannon.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe of the Southern District of Florida asking why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/public-radio-reporter-arrested-for-firebombing-police-cars\/\" title=\"Public Radio \u201cReporter\u201d Arrested For Firebombing Police Cars\">law enforcement officials<\/a> took four months to indict a would-be assassin of Cannon.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;On September 25, 2024, Eric James Rennert was indicted for making violent threats to assault, kidnap, and murder U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who dismissed charges against former President Trump related to his handling of classified information,&rdquo; Grassley wrote. &ldquo;However, according to the indictment, Rennert began making threats against Judge Cannon and her family as early as May 25, 2024.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In July, Judge Cannon <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/15\/judge-in-docs-case-throws-out-dojs-lawfare-against-trump-rules-jack-smiths-appointment-unconstitutional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tossed<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-judge-grants-gop-lawmaker-standing-to-sue-biden-administration-over-unrwa-funding-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Texas judge grants GOP lawmaker standing to sue Biden administration over UNRWA funding - Washington Examiner\">federal government&#038;rsquo<\/a>;s charges brought against former President Donald Trump in Florida after DOJ stormtroopers raided his Mar-a-Lago residence two years ago. Court filings show the FBI was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/21\/fbi-was-authorized-to-use-deadly-force-against-trump-during-mar-a-lago-raid-court-filings-show\/\">authorized<\/a> to use &ldquo;deadly force&rdquo; to conduct the raid that <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/12\/breaking-fbi-raid-warrant-demanded-seizure-of-literally-any-record-trump-ever-saw-during-4-year-presidential-term\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">allowed<\/a> agents to confiscate any record Trump might have interacted with as president. Judge Cannon ultimately dropped the charges after finding prosecutor Jack Smith&rsquo;s appointment as special counsel was unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Cannon&rsquo;s reluctance to fast-track the unprecedented proceedings throughout the criminal case against the former president put a target on her back by Democrats desperate for a conviction before the November election. Just before Judge Cannon effectively killed the chance for a trial this summer, anonymous sources <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/25\/corporate-media-vilify-judge-aileen-cannon-for-doing-her-constitutional-duty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demanded<\/a> through interviews with The New York Times she recuse herself and have a colleague preside over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judge-considers-allowing-video-of-george-floyds-2019-arrest-in-trial\/\" title=\"Judge considers allowing video of George Floyd\u2019s 2019 arrest in trial\">high-profile case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the indictment cited in Grassley&rsquo;s letter, Cannon received threats about her safety in May, but the man behind them was not indicted until September. Attacks against the judge from left-wing activists had also begun to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/28\/judge-aileen-cannon-is-the-latest-object-of-democrats-recusal-obsession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">escalate<\/a> in May as Cannon came under pressure to accelerate the prosecution of the Republican presidential nominee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[RELATED:[RELATED:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/28\/judge-aileen-cannon-is-the-latest-object-of-democrats-recusal-obsession\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Judge Aileen Cannon Is The Latest Object Of Democrats&rsquo; Recusal Obsession<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The indictment says on or about May 25 and May 28, 2024, Rennert communicated &lsquo;a true threat to kidnap and injure&rsquo; Judge Cannon and her family,&rdquo; Grassley wrote. &ldquo;The indictment says that Rennert also threatened to &lsquo;assault, kidnap, and murder&rsquo; Judge Cannon &lsquo;with the intent to impede, intimidate, and interfere&rsquo; with her &lsquo;performance of official duties&rsquo; and &lsquo;with the intent to retaliate&rsquo; against Judge Cannon for performing those duties.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Grassley&rsquo;s letter also highlighted that on &ldquo;July 24, 2024, Rennert again threatened to murder Judge Cannon for all the same reasons.&rdquo; Trump had just been shot at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania 11 days prior, on July 13. The former president survived another attempt by a gunman who lined up a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EricLDaugh\/status\/1835424438612906131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scoped &ldquo;AK-47-style rifle<\/a>&rdquo; within just 300 to 500&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/15\/gov-desantis-announces-independent-investigation-into-second-trump-assassination-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">yards<\/a>&nbsp;of where he was golfing. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Justice Department didn&rsquo;t indict Rennert until September for these criminal threats, even though Judge Cannon has <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">faced consistent violent threats<\/a> for carrying out her constitutional duties,&rdquo; Grassley wrote. &ldquo;Why did it take the Justice Department four months to bring charges against Rennert during which time former President Trump faced two assassination attempts?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist and the author of Social Justice Redux, a conservative newsletter on culture, health, and wellness.
