Of the eight injured, six are in critical condition.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovKemp\/status\/1847777754697154576?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"statement \">statement <\/a>that he and his family are &ldquo;heartbroken&rdquo; by the gangway collapse on the island.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Marty, the girls, and I are heartbroken by today&rsquo;s tragedy on Sapelo Island. What should have been a joyous celebration of Gullah-Geechee culture and history instead turned into tragedy and devastation. Jill and I mourn those who lost their lives, and we pray for the injured and anyone still missing. We are also grateful to the first responders at the scene. My team is in touch with state and local officials, and we stand ready to provide any and all assistance that would be helpful to the community,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The gangway collapse occurred as people were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pride-month-goes-out-with-a-whimper\/\" title=\"Pride Month Goes Out with a Whimper\">celebrating &#038;ldquo<\/a>;Cultural Day&rdquo; on the island, a celebration of the island&rsquo;s Gullah-Geechee community.<\/p>\n<p>Sapelo Island is located about 60 miles south of Savannah.
