According to the Justice \u2063Department Inspector General&#8217;s memo, these parts were improperly secured at the agencies\u2019 training academy \u200bin Quantico,\u2062 Virginia, leading\u2062 to their theft and subsequent discovery\u200c in a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-considering-every-tool-to-attack-second-amendment-as-leftists-push-national-emergency-declaration\/\" title=\"Biden Considering \u2018Every Tool\u2019 To Attack Second Amendment As Leftists Push \u2018National Emergency\u2019 Declaration\">ghost gun<\/a>&#8221; linked to a criminal investigation. \u2064These ghost\u200d guns, often made from kits that do not require background checks, \u2064pose significant public\u2063 safety concerns. <\/p>\n<p>The investigation revealed\u200b that the gun parts, specifically a\u2062 barrel and slide, were from a DEA\u200b firearm\u2064 set\u2063 for destruction in 2019. Horowitz to FBI Director Christopher Wray and DEA Administrator Anne Milgram.<\/p>\n<p>The issue was discovered last year when an unidentified suspect was arrested with a &ldquo;ghost gun,&rdquo; which is typically made from kits that in the past didn&rsquo;t require a background check or registration.<\/p>\n<p>While it investigated the case, the DEA realized that the barrel and slide came from a DEA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/guns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>gun<\/a> that was to be destroyed in 2019. &ldquo;According to DEA records, the slide and barrel were part of a DEA employee issued firearm that had been destroyed over three years earlier,&rdquo; said the memorandum.<\/p>\n<p>In conducting its inquiry, Horowitz discovered that the parts likely came out of unsecured barrels that both law enforcement agencies used to store the parts of employee guns to be destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that virtually everyone who worked at Quantico had access to the &ldquo;gun cleaning room,&rdquo; where the pistol parts were stored in open barrels.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The gun cleaning room was accessible to thousands of employees and contractors at Quantico, including FBI and DEA armory employees, FBI and DEA academy trainers and students, cleaning staff, maintenance contractors, and others. Because the gun cleaning room was in a shared building that also held the Quantico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/food-and-beverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>cafeteria<\/a>, security control measures were limited to a Quantico access card provided to every individual that had access to the grounds at Quantico. There were no safeguards to ensure that the location where the slides and barrels were stored was secured, document who had access to the location or DEA property, or document when the slides and barrels were destroyed,&rdquo; the memo said.<\/p>\n<p>Worse, neither agency had set policies for handling the parts.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Indeed, in the investigation that led to this memorandum, the OIG was unable to identify the individual or individuals who stole the DEA slide and barrel that were later recovered during an arrest,&rdquo; Horowitz wrote in the memo.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/washington-secrets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SEE THE LATEST POLITICAL NEWS AND BUZZ FROM WASHINGTON SECRETS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since finishing its report, both agencies claim that they have tightened security and set up formal procedures for storing and destroying employee firearms.
