Judge Anna Manasco determined that \u2062Secretary of State \u2062Wes Allen&#8217;s decision to deactivate over 3,200 voters due to citizenship questions breached the National Voter Registration Act,\u200b which prohibits\u2063 systematic\u2062 voter removals within 90 days of an election. This ruling comes as Allen had announced the purge just 84 days before the \u200c2024 General Election. The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit claiming that Allen&#8217;s actions systematically disenfranchised registered voters, \u2063including \u200cthose who had recently become citizens. The Department of Homeland Security assigns alien registration numbers to noncitizens, who could eventually gain citizenship. Allen had argued that the DHS, the predominant record-keeper of citizenship status changes, was uncooperative with identifying which Alabamians with alien registration numbers had been naturalized.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice responded with a lawsuit, saying Allen had initiated a systematic removal of registered voters that incidentally deactivated hundreds of registered voters who had become citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Court papers revealed that Allen&rsquo;s program was flawed in that it had resulted in about 2,000 citizens being deactivated who were then forced to take steps to reregister to vote. At least one of the people who received a notice that he was deactivated said in an affidavit that he also never had an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/one-in-four-illegal-aliens-released-into-u-s-without-registration-number\/\" title=\"One in Four Illegal Aliens Released Into U.S. Without Registration Number\">alien registration number<\/a> and was always a citizen.<\/p>\n<p>The program also resulted in at least 106 people asking Allen to remove them from the voter rolls, signaling they were ineligible to vote.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit is one of two the DOJ has brought over the NVRA provision that bans certain voter roll cleanup activity during the quiet period before an election.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The department also filed suit last week against Virginia for announcing in August that it was continuing a program to identify and clear alleged noncitizens from its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-democrats-h-r-1-is-a-power-grab-would-undermine-states-election-rules\/\" title=\"Republicans: Democrats\u2019 H.R. 1 Is a Power Grab, Would Undermine States\u2019 Election Rules\">voter registration list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gov.
