The controversy started on September 13 when Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski made a post regarding Vice President Kamala Harris on his personal social media account, as reported by USA Today. In his now-deleted post, Zuchowski suggested keeping track of addresses of those who displayed her campaign signs, implying they would be targeted if “illegal” immigrants needed housing. This prompted immediate concerns from the NAACP about voter intimidation. On Tuesday, the Justice Department stated it would monitor compliance with federal voting rights laws in Portage County during early voting and on Election Day. The department noted that voters had expressed worries about potential intimidation and threats related to their voting activities, which are prohibited under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The ACLU of Ohio described Zuchowski’s comments as an unconstitutional threat against individuals showing political support through yard signs, leading some residents to remove their signs out of fear. Republican Governor Mike DeWine deemed Zuchowski\u2019s comments “unfortunate” and “not helpful.” However, Dan Lusheck from the Ohio Secretary of State’s office indicated that they found no violation of election laws in the sheriff\u2019s statements and emphasized accountability for elected officials’ remarks.
