Milwaukee&#8217;s election administrator, Paulina Gutierrez, explained that each ballot box is monitored by cameras \u2062and that ballots are transported \u2064to a \u200dsecure\u2062 operations center to ensure their\u2062 authenticity. Drop boxes wound up in front of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/wisconsin-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Wisconsin Supreme Court<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/08\/politics\/wisconsin-ballot-drop-boxes-supreme-court\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>originally outlawed them<\/a> in 2022, but the newly liberal-leaning court<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/3002647\/wisconsin-supreme-court-ballot-drop-box-case-crucial-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> overturned that ruling<\/a> in 2024, giving them the green light ahead of the November election.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Wisconsin&rsquo;s used ballot boxes for decades and decades,&rdquo; Wisconsin Elections Commission Chairwoman Ann Jacobs told <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wisconsin-election-officials-push-back-critics-drop-boxes\/story?id=114735681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>ABC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Election officials are now trying to set the record straight about their safety.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have specially trained ballot courier teams [and] we have a pretty strong chain of custody,&rdquo; Paulina Gutierrez, the new election administrator for Milwaukee, told the outlet.&rdquo;We are following the best practices that have been provided by national and federal partners and also following the guidance of the Wisconsin Election Commission.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Gutierrez said every ballot box has a camera and that when ballots are dropped off, they are taken to an operations center to ensure they are legitimate. &ldquo;If at any point some of that stuff isn&rsquo;t adding up, it won&rsquo;t be counted,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Unfortunately, some communities have fallen prey to the conspiracy theories surrounding drop boxes and have elected not to use them,&rdquo; Jacobs said. &ldquo;I say unfortunately because drop boxes are a safe, easy, and effective way to transmit your ballot directly from you, the voter, to your clerk.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Drop boxes are heavily embraced throughout the state&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/3109389\/milwaukees-mayor-wisconsin-voters-their-vote-counts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Democratic strongholds<\/a> in Dane and Milwaukee counties, but they are hardly utilized in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/3124519\/republican-support-dwindles-in-wisconsins-historic-gop-strongholds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Republican-heavy municipalities<\/a>. Six Republican-led municipalities in Milwaukee County, two in Waukesha County, and three in Dodge County opted not to use ballot drop boxes, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/25\/politics\/wisconsin-wausau-mayor-doug-diny-moved-drop-box\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Wausau Mayor Doug Diny, a Republican, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3167649\/wisconsin-mayor-removes-ballot-drop-box-city-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>removed one drop box<\/a> from City Hall, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3174666\/wisconsin-authorities-investigating-ballot-box-removal-wausau-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>prompting an investigation<\/a> from the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Diny claimed he did nothing wrong by removing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-zuckerberg-bans-president-trump-from-using-facebook-indefinitely\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Zuckerberg Bans President Trump from Using Facebook \u201cIndefinitely\u201d\">ballot drop box<\/a>, which he said he moved because it was not secure on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is no different than the maintenance guy moving it out there,&rdquo; Diny said on the matter. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m a member of staff. There&rsquo;s nothing nefarious going on here.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled this year that only city clerks have the right to choose whether to use a drop box.
