The stadium was being ⁢used as a shelter for first responders at the time.

The aftermath revealed widespread destruction; at least 125 homes were destroyed⁣ before the hurricane⁣ made landfall, and ⁢there were reported fatalities in areas ‌like Fort Pierce. As Hurricane Milton weakened‍ after landfall, it was downgraded to a Category 1 storm,‍ still capable of producing ‌damaging winds and heavy rains.

Weather experts warned residents ⁢about the dangers associated with rapidly receding tides, a phenomenon known as storm surge, which became apparent in Tampa as the winds drew water away from the shore. The Associated Press reported that by 4 a.m. EDT, more than 3 million homes and businesses were without power as the hurricane moved across the state. The storm caused significant destruction, with winds exceeding 100 mph (160 kph) and multiple tornadoes, although Tampa avoided a direct hit. It made landfall Wednesday night in Siesta Key near Sarasota, about 70 miles south of Tampa.

In the Tampa area, conditions remained critical as St. Petersburg experienced over 16 inches (41 centimeters) of rain, leading to flash flood warnings from the National Weather Service for various regions in western and central Florida. The National Hurricane Center confirmed that Siesta Key was hit around 8:30 p.m. EDT with maximum winds estimated at around 120 mph.

One notable impact was on Tropicana Field, home to the Tampa Bay Rays in St. Petersburg; its roof was severely damaged by strong winds while it served as shelter for first responders.

Additionally, a construction crane collapsed onto an office building in St. Petersburg due to high winds from Hurricane Milton.

As the hurricane approached Tampa Bay, water levels receded dramatically—a phenomenon reminiscent of past hurricanes—which could pose dangers if tides suddenly reversed.

While fatalities have been reported—particularly at Spanish Lakes Country Club in Fort Pierce—the exact number remains unclear.
