Historically, the winner of the popular vote\u200b has usually\u200c also won the Electoral College, although there have been instances\u200c where this did not occur, notably in the elections of 2000 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In response\u200b to Walz&#8217;s remarks, the Trump campaign questioned whether he was undermining the legitimacy of a potential Trump \u2062victory. Walz has supported legislation in Minnesota \u200dto\u200b allocate its Electoral\u200d College votes based on the national popular vote, a move adopted by several other states as \u2064well. Tim Walz of Minnesota made in California about ending the Electoral College vote for president in favor of a straight popular one.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think all of us know the Electoral College needs to go,&rdquo; Walz said at a campaign fundraiser with California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday afternoon, according to pool reporters in the room, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/10\/08\/walz-says-the-electoral-college-needs-to-go-00182981\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politico<\/a> reported. &ldquo;We need a national popular vote that is something. But that&rsquo;s not the world we live in.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Walz then added, in light of the Electoral College system, he and Harris are hitting swing states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nevada, in their bid to win the presidency next month.<\/p>\n<p>The Founders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dems-continue-open-attack-constitution-look-completely-dismantle-electoral-college\/?ff_source=usaheadlinenews.com\/anti-semitic-hate-crime-university-california-davis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">established<\/a> the Electoral College vote in the Constitution to ensure smaller population states would also have a say in who would become president. Each state is allotted votes based on the number of House members it has, which is based on population.<\/p>\n<p>States also receive two votes for the two senators each state has. So for example California, the nation&rsquo;s most populous state, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/electoral-college\/allocation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">54 votes<\/a>, while states like Alaska, Delaware and North Dakota just have three.<\/p>\n<p> <script type=\"text\/javascript\"> \t\t\tif ( getCookie( \"ff_subbed\" ) ) { \t\t\t\tdocument.getElementById(\"stnvideo\").remove() \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p>The winner of the popular vote for president is usually the winner of the Electoral College, as well, but there have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/news\/electoral-college-founding-fathers-constitutional-convention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five times<\/a> in U.S. history when this wasn&rsquo;t case, the two most recent being 2000 and 2016, when Democrats Al Gore and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bill-clinton-roasted-hillarys-2016-campaign-obscene-outburst-new-book-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hillary Clinton<\/a> won the popular vote, but lost the Electoral College.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.270towin.com\/2016_Election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won<\/a> 304 Electoral College votes to Clinton&rsquo;s 227, but the latter won the popular vote, approximately 65.9 million to Trump&rsquo;s 63 million.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton was particularly able to run up the score in Democratic large population bastions like California and New York, where she beat Trump by about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/2016-election\/results\/map\/president\/california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3.4 million<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/2016-election\/results\/map\/president\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.5 million<\/a>, respectively. It is a way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/civil-rights\/report\/the-national-popular-vote-misusing-interstate-compact-bypass-the-constitution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">try to bypass<\/a> the constitutional amendment process. The pact would likely be challenged in court if the requisite number of states needed to reach 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency ever sought to implement it.<\/p>\n<p>Politico reported that the Harris campaign released a statement soon after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/walzs-china-stories-begin-unravel-harris-campaign-scrambles-explain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walz<\/a> made his comments, saying, &ldquo;Gov. Walz believes that every vote matters in the Electoral College, and he is honored to be traveling the country and battleground states working to earn support for the Harris-Walz ticket.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He was commenting to a crowd of strong supporters about how the campaign is built to win 270 electoral votes. And, he was thanking them for their support that is helping fund those efforts.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>During a 2019 appearance on &ldquo;Jimmy Kimmel Live,&rdquo; Harris, then a U.S. senator from California, said she was &ldquo;open to the discussion&rdquo; of ending the Electoral College, after fellow then-presidential candidate Sen.
