system registered even more voters who failed to prove eligibility &mdash; totaling more than 1,500 &mdash; following previous <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/24\/oregon-secretary-of-state-registered-1200-possible-noncitizens-to-vote-insists-noncitizen-voting-is-rare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discoveries<\/a> that a gap in the system had placed noncitizens on the voter rolls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even Democrat Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade, who <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/24\/oregon-secretary-of-state-registered-1200-possible-noncitizens-to-vote-insists-noncitizen-voting-is-rare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defended<\/a> the system in the past, called for an independent <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.oregon.gov\/oregon-newsroom\/OR\/SOS\/Posts\/Post\/protect-2024-election-motor-voter-audit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">audit<\/a> alongside Democrat Gov. Tina Kotek, according to a press release. The governor announced <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.oregon.gov\/oregon-newsroom\/OR\/GOV\/Posts\/Post\/governor-kotek-announces-actions-following-oregon-motor-voter-program-data-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monday<\/a> she would pause the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/georgia-republican-state-senators-propose-bills-to-end-no-excuse-mail-voting-automatic-registration\/\" title=\"Georgia Republican State Senators Propose Bills to End No-excuse Mail Voting, Automatic Registration\">automatic voter registration<\/a> at the Oregon DMV until completion of a more thorough review.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1d1131e7267583eab19e57023a40d3b2 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1d1131e7267583eab19e57023a40d3b2\"><\/div>\n<p>When Oregonians 16 and older apply for a permit, driver&rsquo;s license, or ID with documents that prove American citizenship, the DMV sends their information to the secretary of state&rsquo;s office, which registers them to vote through the &ldquo;motor voter&rdquo; system.<\/p>\n<p>But according to the DMV &ldquo;after action <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/odot\/DMV\/docs\/After-Action-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>&rdquo; released yesterday, this system had three major flaws: a technology glitch, DMV workers <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/24\/oregon-secretary-of-state-registered-1200-possible-noncitizens-to-vote-insists-noncitizen-voting-is-rare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recording<\/a> documents like foreign passports and birth certificates as American, and the system treating residents of the territory American Samoa as citizens since 2016.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This resulted in the state registering more than 1,500 potential noncitizens to vote. The state is unsure of their citizenship status, but found they did not present the proper documents when registering at the DMV, according to Monday&rsquo;s release.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The DMV&rsquo;s after action report raises serious concerns about this important part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-says-he-supports-ending-filibuster-cites-abusive-use-by-democrats-during-trump-term\/\" title=\"Biden Says He Supports Ending Filibuster, Cites \u2018Abusive\u2019 Use By Democrats During Trump Term\">voter registration system<\/a>,&rdquo; Griffin-Valade <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.oregon.gov\/oregon-newsroom\/OR\/SOS\/Posts\/Post\/protect-2024-election-motor-voter-audit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in the release. Still, she claimed that &ldquo;these new errors will not impact the 2024 election.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-24c11ae7162492d232f8cab7dd36f220 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-24c11ae7162492d232f8cab7dd36f220\"><\/div>\n<p>The secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.oregon.gov\/oregon-newsroom\/OR\/SOS\/Posts\/Post\/protect-2024-election-motor-voter-audit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> the Oregon Elections Division to hire someone to fill an oversight position for the state&rsquo;s &ldquo;motor voter&rdquo; system, implement a process for &ldquo;regular data checks,&rdquo; and update rules regarding the &ldquo;motor votor&rdquo; system. Meanwhile, Kotek <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.oregon.gov\/oregon-newsroom\/OR\/GOV\/Posts\/Post\/governor-kotek-announces-actions-following-oregon-motor-voter-program-data-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ordered<\/a> an audit from an &ldquo;independent, external third party vendor,&rdquo; pausing automatic voter registration until the DMV finishes its review.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The DMV is set to finish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/odot\/DMV\/docs\/After-Action-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviewing<\/a> more than 130,000 susceptible voter registrations on Dec. 1. These records have already been reviewed manually, but another review is seeking those records &ldquo;without supporting documents&rdquo; so that registrants can be asked to provide proof of citizenship where necessary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Questions from the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/23\/zuckbucks-org-promotes-6-million-election-grant-from-left-wing-dark-money-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">left-wing<\/a> Institute for Responsive Government initially <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/24\/oregon-secretary-of-state-registered-1200-possible-noncitizens-to-vote-insists-noncitizen-voting-is-rare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prompted<\/a> the state to review its voter rolls. Griffin-Valade initially <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/16\/oregon-secretary-of-state-defends-law-automatically-registering-hundreds-of-noncitizens-to-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discovered<\/a> more than 300 noncitizens registered to vote last month. The secretary initially <a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/ORSOS\/bulletins\/3b59de1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> she was &ldquo;confident&rdquo; the DMV would deal with the issue and not allow this to happen again.<\/p>\n<p>But a further review turned up even more likely ineligible voters &mdash; totaling more than <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/24\/oregon-secretary-of-state-registered-1200-possible-noncitizens-to-vote-insists-noncitizen-voting-is-rare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,200<\/a> at the time. After this discovery, Kotek <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.oregon.gov\/oregon-newsroom\/OR\/GOV\/Posts\/Post\/governor-kotek-directs-dmv-to-take-action-to-protect-integrity-of-oregon-motor-voter-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ordered<\/a> the DMV to conduct a review. When the department released the results today, it found an additional 300 likely ineligible voters on the rolls. The governor recently told county clerks to <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.oregon.gov\/oregon-newsroom\/OR\/SOS\/Posts\/Post\/protect-2024-election-motor-voter-audit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inactivate<\/a> these additional registrations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0876e04e96316e071cb188e54fec548b fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-0876e04e96316e071cb188e54fec548b\"><\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;An immediate, external audit of the Oregon Motor Voter program and a pause to data transmission between the Oregon DMV and SOS are imperative steps to ensuring the program can operate with integrity and accuracy,&rdquo; Kotek <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.oregon.gov\/oregon-newsroom\/OR\/GOV\/Posts\/Post\/governor-kotek-announces-actions-following-oregon-motor-voter-program-data-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a release.<\/p>\n<p>But the DMV is only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/odot\/DMV\/docs\/After-Action-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investigating<\/a> registrations since Jan. 1, 2021, because it claims the errors could not have happened before then, according to its report.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Republican Christine Drazan, who lost Oregon&rsquo;s 2022 governor race by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/2022-election\/results\/oregon\/statewide-offices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less than 4 percent<\/a>, said the &ldquo;agency refuses to audit all records from the start of the program&rdquo; in <a href=\"https:\/\/sos.oregon.gov\/voting\/Pages\/motor-voter-faq.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2016<\/a>.
