The surprise attack was an escalation in a long-simmering conflict that vaulted the Middle East back into the consciousness of the West, spurring Hamas-sympathetic college students to stage protests on campuses and changing the nature of the presidential election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Israel has led a successful campaign against Hamas and its allies &mdash; striking right in the heart of Iran, the primary backer of Hamas and the Jewish state&rsquo;s other primary foe, Hezbollah, in Lebanon to the country&rsquo;s north. Ingenious attacks, successful ground invasions, and daring rescue operations to bring hostages captured on Oct. 7 home have not been without criticism from the world community, however.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This week, the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>is taking a hard look at what the last 12 months have meant for Israel, the United States&rsquo;s strongest and most important ally in an unstable part of the world, and what the conflict has meant and will mean for the U.S. itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Defense Reporter <strong>Mike Brest <\/strong>opened our series this morning by stitching together and making sense of the various strands erupting from the brutal attack.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Since the Oct. 7 attack, Israeli forces have carried out<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3172291\/israel-invasion-lebanon-where-things-stand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> ground operations<\/a> in Gaza and Lebanon, and have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/3174517\/iron-dome-david-sling-arrow-israel-air-defense-systems-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> intercepted missiles and rockets<\/a> fired from both, in addition to projectiles fired from Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, and Israel, in retaliation, has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3170350\/israel-strikes-houthis-in-largest-air-attack-against-yemen-yet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> carried out strikes<\/a> in all of those countries,&rdquo; Mike wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Back home in the U.S., it upended the relationship between America and one of its strongest allies. The Biden administration has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/2997474\/how-bidens-position-on-israel-has-changed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> struggled to walk a delicate tightrope<\/a> of supporting Israel while placating an anti-Israeli wing of the Democratic Party that believes genocide is being committed in Gaza. Such is the divide, particularly in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3159588\/uncommitted-national-movement-no-harris-endorsement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> swing state Michigan<\/a>, that it may cost the Democrats the White House come November. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-rules-against-biden-doj-in-high-stakes-jan-6-case-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Supreme Court rules against Biden DOJ in high-stakes Jan. 6 case - Washington Examiner\">administration&#038;rsquo<\/a>;s delaying of arms to Israel has become a particular diplomatic sore spot between President <strong>Joe Biden<\/strong> and Israeli Prime Minister <strong>Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong>,&rdquo; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Opening up conflict with Iran was not an immediate side effect of Israel&rsquo;s response to Hamas, but it could prove to be the most dangerous &mdash; and most important. The unsteady state of Gaza would make it a far less capable foe without the monetary and institutional backing of Iran. While the country has made it clear it wants to wipe Israel off the map, it wasn&rsquo;t until the post-Oct. 7 conflict that the battle between the countries has played out in such stark ways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Iran launched rockets directly at Israel from its soil for the first time ever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-on-defense\/2965794\/us-shot-down-nearly-half-of-the-drones-iran-launched-in-israel-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>in April<\/a> and followed that historic attack with another round <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3172703\/iran-missiles-toward-israel-retaliatory-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>earlier this month<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bulk of the fighting is taking place between Iran&rsquo;s proxies in Hamas and Hezbollah. However, Iran being drawn into overt attacks is worrying defense experts who see world stability being threatened if a country on the brink of possessing a nuclear weapon is emboldened to challenge its enemies head-on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think the big threat for Israel and for U.S. priorities in the region is the role that Iran has played in fomenting and then supporting this conflict,&rdquo; Brian Carter of the Critical Threats Project at the American Enterprise Institute told Mike<em>.<\/em> &ldquo;When I say this conflict, I&rsquo;m not just talking about Gaza or southern Lebanon, but in fact, the regional war that has been ongoing since Oct. 7. While Chief Justice <strong>John Roberts <\/strong>and the court weather storms of criticism and plunging approval numbers, they aren&rsquo;t shying away from thorny questions that relate directly to fundamental rights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Supreme Court Reporter <strong>Kaelan Deese <\/strong>wrote for us this morning that on Tuesday, the court will hear arguments about the regulation of &ldquo;ghost guns&rdquo; &mdash; kits sold online for assembling firearms at home that can be untraceable. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives issued a rule in 2022 that would treat the kits like firearms. But <strong>Jennifer VanDerStok <\/strong>and other private gun builders argue the agency overstepped its authority with the rule and are fighting to rein in the ATF.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The ATF defends the rule as necessary to combat the threat of ghost guns, which are being used in a growing number of crimes across the nation,&rdquo; Kaelan wrote. &ldquo;Ghost guns, according to the ATF, pose an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-google-removes-parler-from-app-store-amid-reports-that-trump-is-joining-the-platform\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Google Removes Parler From App Store Amid Reports That Trump is Joining the Platform\">urgent public safety threat<\/a> because they involve components that can be &lsquo;readily converted into a working firearm&rsquo; and can be done so anonymously, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/supreme-court-will-weigh-challenge-to-biden-regulations-on-ghost-guns-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Supreme Court will weigh challenge to Biden regulations on \u2018ghost guns\u2019 - Washington Examiner\">bypassing traditional gun control measures<\/a> such as background checks.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How &ldquo;readily&rdquo; the kits can be converted into firearms might be the key to whether the ATF rule stands or if the court will continue its record of rolling back regulations issued by administrative agencies rather than Congress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the court struck down a Trump-era ATF rule banning bump stocks. That ruling, Kaelan wrote, will likely have a greater bearing on the justices than the 6-3 <em>New York State Rifle &amp; Pistol Association v.
