According to sources speaking with CNN and the <em>Associated Press<\/em>, the contract that expired last week will be extended until Jan. 15 to allow for further negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Over 45,000 port workers, who cover 36 ports along the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/economy\/3158693\/donalds-demands-biden-prevent-east-coast-port-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">East<\/a>&nbsp;and Gulf coasts, began their strike on Tuesday. The ports covered by the strikers are responsible for significant parts of the United States supply chain, leading to fears of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-chief-of-staff-agrees-inflation-a-high-class-problem\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Chief Of Staff Agrees: Inflation A \u2018High-Class Problem\u2019\">supply chain nightmare<\/a> before the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>If it had continued, the strike would have threatened to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/business\/3170835\/port-worker-strike-could-cause-shortages-price-bumps-bananas-cars-alcohol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"raise prices\">raise prices<\/a> on bananas, toys, seafood, cars, chocolate, and alcohol, among other products.<\/p>\n<p>The strike was over disagreements in pay and automation. In a rare moment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3176232\/harris-trump-foreign-shipping-companies-dock-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"unity\">unity<\/a>, President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Donald Trump all came out in support of the workers.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This strike is about fairness,&rdquo; Harris said Tuesday. &ldquo;Foreign-owned shipping companies have made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hawley-proposes-15-minimum-wage-for-billion-dollar-companies\/\" title=\"Hawley Proposes  Minimum Wage For Billion-Dollar Companies\">record profits<\/a> and executive compensation has grown. The Longshoremen, who play a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/harris-and-trump-find-common-enemy-to-blame-for-port-strike-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Harris and Trump find common enemy to blame for port strike - Washington Examiner\">vital role transporting essential goods<\/a> across America, deserve a fair share of these record profits.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;American workers should be able to negotiate for better wages, especially since the shipping companies are mostly foreign flag vessels, including the largest consortium ONE,&rdquo; Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>The strike was met with criticism from many, however, due to the inevitable inflation that would result, as well as the possibility of shortages of popular commodities.
