While GOP supporters praised his \u2064calm and unexpectedly amiable demeanor, even members of the Walz campaign noted\u2063 they were unprepared for this\u2063 approach, anticipating a more aggressive stance from Vance based on his previous \u2063campaign rhetoric. <\/p>\n<p>The \u2062debate\u2062 seemed to contrast sharply with a previous confrontation between \u200bVice President Kamala \u200cHarris\u2062 and former President Donald Trump, where Trump appeared\u200c combative. Tim Walz, many viewers walked away with the impression that Vance put on a master class.<\/p>\n<p>While Republican voters are praising Vance for appearing calm and actually nice at times, even Walz&rsquo;s aides admitted the strategy was one they did not expect.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/10\/03\/jd-vance-vp-debate-nice?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Axios reported<\/a> on Thursday that an unnamed member of the Walz team said they &ldquo;expected more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/maga-boat-parade-participant-goes-off-cnn-reporter-attempting-downplay-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MAGA<\/a> mode, given what [Vance has] been saying repeatedly on the stump.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Walz campaign was clearly expecting something more like what they&rsquo;ve seen in Vance&rsquo;s remarks on the campaign trail and his demeanor with crowds, which have been indicative of how polarizing politics are in this election cycle.<\/p>\n<p>In September, Vice President<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-msnbc-host-cant-believe-hearing-anti-trumper-vows-support-45-kamala-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Kamala Harris<\/a> and former President Donald Trump battled in their own CBS debate, with Trump on the offensive as he tried to remind Americans of how awful Harris&rsquo;s time in office has been as President Joe Biden&rsquo;s second.<\/p>\n<p> <script type=\"text\/javascript\"> \t\t\tif ( getCookie( \"ff_subbed\" ) ) { \t\t\t\tdocument.getElementById(\"stnvideo\").remove() \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p>Trump appeared aggressive and dismayed many by taking the bait when Harris criticized the attendance at his rallies.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, Tuesday&rsquo;s dynamic was a total reversal, courtesy of Vance.<\/p>\n<p>A Vance advisor told Axios, &ldquo;We figured it would throw him off,&rdquo; further noting, &ldquo;Democrats and much of the media bought their own false caricature of J.D., that he was just some heartless fire-breather.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The mainstream media certainly had their preconceptions of Vance, whether it be from his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/context-around-jd-vances-childless-cat-lady-remarks-surfaces-media-owes-apology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/vance-says-childless-cat-ladies-comment-taken-out-of-context-and-blown-up-by-democrats-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Vance says \u2018childless cat ladies\u2019 comment taken out of context and blown up by Democrats - Washington Examiner\">childless cat ladies&#038;rdquo<\/a>;<\/a> comments about who&rsquo;s running the government or just by sheer association with his more combative running mate.<\/p>\n<p>One advisor remarked, &ldquo;J.D. knew instinctively that what would actually move the ball forward is creating the contrast between Trump&rsquo;s successes and Kamala&rsquo;s failures.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While being warm and relatable, Vance still achieved that end by reminding viewers where Harris was lacking since taking office in 2021, whether it be through her terrible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-brings-back-lock-kamala-demands-impeachment-prosecution-handling-border-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">border policies<\/a> or how much prices have risen.<\/p>\n<p>Viewers also noted the difference in appearance between the two.<\/p>\n<p>Vance appeared relaxed in his body language.<\/p>\n<p>He even gave viewers a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Crimeson33\/status\/1841297721417769118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viral snapshot<\/a> in which he broke the fourth wall, reacting with an irreverent smirk toward the TV camera as Walz spoke.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-trump-drops-humiliating-story-tim-walz-talks-phone-call-governor-begged-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">governor<\/a>, on the other hand, was panicked and wore a frown coupled with a wide-eyed glare into the camera.<\/p>\n<p>Call it superficial, but all this matters.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GMWQnoDA0o8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Smithsonian noted<\/a>, the first televised debate between Vice President Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in 1960 had a huge impact on the outcome of the election.
