As of\u200d October 3, 2024, imports from \u200dtwo Chinese companies\u2014Changzhou Guanghui Food \u200bIngredients Co.,\u2063 Ltd., which produces artificial\u2063 sweeteners, and Baowu Group Xinjiang Bayi Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., a\u2064 steel manufacturer\u2014have been banned under the Uyghur Forced Labor \u200cPrevention Act (UFLPA). This legislation\u2062 operates under the presumption that nearly all goods from \u2062Xinjiang are\u200b produced using forced\u200c labor.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary \u2064of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas stated that the UFLPA represents\u200c a critical tool \u2064for the Biden administration\u200b in addressing and \u2063reducing forced \u200dlabor in international supply chains. This\u200b action is part of\u2062 a \u2063broader\u2063 initiative\u2063 that has now removed a total \u200dof 75 entities\u200b from the ability to \u200dexport goods to the U.S. as a method \u200dto \u2064ensure American businesses are\u200b not \u2063indirectly involved \u2063in these human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p>Additional efforts \u200cto \u2063enforce the ban will\u200d be managed by U.S. Customs and Border\u2062 Protection, as the U.S. aims to set new international standards against forced labor\u2064 and \u2062foster compliance \u2063among \u2064businesses regarding their supply chains. This legislation made it U.S. policy to operate under the belief that the majority of, if not all, goods from Xinjiang are made through the use of forced labor of Uyghurs, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/black-lives-matter-a-movement-built-on-the-illusion-of-martyrdom\/\" title=\"Black Lives Matter: A Movement Built On The Illusion Of Martyrdom\">minority ethnic group<\/a> in China.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act is the Biden-Harris Administration&rsquo;s most powerful tool to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/temus-supply-chains-in-china-could-be-using-forced-labor-report\/\" title=\"Report: Temu&#039;s China Supply Chains May Utilize Forced Labor\">combat forced labor<\/a> and hold its perpetrators to account,&rdquo; said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.<\/p>\n<p>By refusing imports from the region, the UFLPA ensures that the United States is not complicit in funding such companies. In July, the U.S. government <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2024\/07\/courts-governments-advance-efforts-to-investigate-forced-labor-in-xinjiang\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prioritized<\/a> companies that produce seafood, aluminum, and PVC to the list, bringing the total number of entities to 75, the Department of Homeland Security noted in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2024\/10\/02\/dhs-places-first-steel-and-aspartame-prc-based-companies-uflpa-entity-list\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a>. The ban will be enforced by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and go into effect starting Oct. 3.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The UFLPA is catalyzing American businesses to fully examine and assess their supply chains and setting a new standard for our international partners as we work together to eradicate forced labor from the global economy,&rdquo; Mayorkas said. &ldquo;The Department of Homeland Security will continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/us-prohibits-specific-imports-from-china-over-forced-labor-allegations-washington-examiner-2\/\" title=\"US prohibits specific imports from China over forced labor allegations - Washington Examiner\">add exploitative companies<\/a> to the UFLPA Entity List, enforce the law, and uphold the values of the United States.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The UFLPA Entity List currently comprises manufacturing companies that produce plastics, chemicals, batteries, electronics, agriculture, and household products, among other things, the DHS reported. Wednesday&rsquo;s actions by DHS were the first time steel and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/us-prohibits-specific-imports-from-china-over-forced-labor-allegations-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"US prohibits specific imports from China over forced labor allegations - Washington Examiner\">artificial sweetener company<\/a> was added to the list.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Identifying these additional entities provides U.S. importers with more information to conduct due diligence and examine their supply chains for risks of forced labor to ensure compliance with the UFLPA,&rdquo; noted the press release.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Today&rsquo;s actions reaffirm our commitment to eliminating forced labor from U.S. supply chains and upholding our values of human rights for all,&rdquo; said Robert Silvers, DHS undersecretary for policy. &ldquo;No sector is off-limits. We will continue to identify entities across industries and hold accountable those who seek to profit from exploitation and abuse.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The UFLPA was signed into law by President Joe Biden <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/trade\/forced-labor\/UFLPA\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on Dec. 23, 2001<\/a>, and went into effect on June 21, 2022. The law was in response to widespread allegations of abuse by the Chinese government of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities, according to the <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-forced-labor-united-states-trade-8ec1637835bc9388c84796f77f218c2c\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Associated Press<\/a><\/em>.
