Tim Walz faced was his assertion that he was in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. Despite this being a relatively weak point, he struggled to provide a clear response, appearing flustered and unprepared for the situation. As noted by Colin Rugg from Trending Politics on X, Walz has repeatedly stated that he was in Hong Kong at the time of the protests. This claim had already been fact-checked extensively prior to the debate; The New York Times reported that while Walz did teach in China as part of an American teacher program, he didn’t arrive there until August 1989\u2014after the protests had occurred. When moderator Margaret Brennan asked him about this discrepancy, Walz began with an unrelated anecdote about his upbringing in rural Nebraska and then fumbled through a two-minute explanation without addressing her question directly. Eventually, he acknowledged that he “misspoke” and referred to himself as a “knucklehead.” His rambling response did little to reassure viewers or clarify his earlier statements about his past experiences.
