While he had\u2063 asserted that\u200c he was in Hong \u200cKong\u200b during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, it was later revealed that he did not travel\u200b to Asia until after the protests.\u200b Walz, who was a teacher at\u200b the time, frequently visited China with students. about travel to China when pressed at debate<\/h1>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-title-line\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<div id=\"Brid_1774149\" class=\"tpd-featured-video bridtv\"><\/div>\n<p>Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/tim-walz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Tim Walz<\/a> (D-MN) admitted during Tuesday&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/debates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"debate\">debate<\/a> to mischaracterizing his past travels to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3172315\/tim-walz-misrepresented-time-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"debate\">China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Walz, while still a teacher in Minnesota, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/texas-border-city-man-gets-prison-time-for-sexually-abusing-girls-in-mexico\/\" title=\"Texas Border City Man Gets Prison Time for Sexually Abusing Girls in Mexico\">routinely traveled<\/a> to China with visiting students and had previously claimed to have been in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/live-blog\/2024-vice-presidential-debate-live-updates-vance-walz-cbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE: VANCE AND WALZ GO TOE-TO-TOE IN CBS CONTEST<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recent reporting, however, indicated he hadn&rsquo;t traveled to Asia until after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fact-check-no-this-photo-does-not-show-a-recent-french-protest-against-covid-19-rules\/\" title=\"FACT CHECK: No, This Photo Does Not Show A Recent French Protest Against COVID-19 Rules\">protests occurred<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Walz, asked about those discrepancies, recounted his work traveling with students to China and claimed to be a &ldquo;knucklehead sometimes&rdquo; but initially dodged answering the question.<\/p>\n<p>After moderators pressed Walz in a follow-up, he conceded that he had previously &ldquo;misspoke&rdquo; on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;All I said on this was as I got there that summer and I misspoke on this,&rdquo; Walz responded. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I was in Hong Kong and China during the democracy protests,&rdquo; he continued, &ldquo;and from that, I learned a lot of what needed to be in government.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the initial half of his answer, Walz argued that he &ldquo;learned a lot about China&rdquo; during his travels and stated that former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Donald Trump<\/a> would have benefitted from accompanying him on one of those trips.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I guarantee you he wouldn&rsquo;t be praising Xi Jinping about COVID, and I guarantee you he wouldn&rsquo;t start a trade war that he ends up losing,&rdquo;
