The city&#8217;s\u200b proposition, which was\u2062 endorsed by 53.4% of residents in\u200d a ballot, aimed to require voter ID starting in 2026 while enhancing in-person\u2062 voting locations \u200dand monitoring ballot drop-boxes. However, the new state legislation prohibits local governments from\u2062 enacting such ID requirements.\u200b This law \u200dcame in \u2064response to concerns raised \u2063by the California Attorney General, Rob Bonta, who had previously \u200dsued \u200cHuntington Beach, arguing that the voter\u200d ID policy \u200bundermined democratic principles by potentially \u2063restricting\u200b voting access. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., signed a law Sunday undermining the will of Huntington Beach voters who approved a measure requiring voter ID. The new state law bars cities from adopting such measures.<\/p>\n<p>In March, 53.4% of Huntington Beach residents approved a ballot measure that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/judges-say-north-carolina-law-requiring-voter-photo-id-is-discriminatory\/\" title=\"Judges Say North Carolina Law Requiring Voter Photo ID Is Discriminatory\">require voters present identification<\/a> in order to vote in municipal elections. The measure was slated to take effect in 2026 and also permitted the city to &ldquo;provide more in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-dems-pass-bill-banning-local-voter-id-requirements\/\" title=\"California Dems Pass Bill Banning Local Voter ID Requirements\">-person voting locations&#038;rdquo<\/a>; and &ldquo;monitor ballot drop-boxes.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-91c7a337069b132413043d66ced69f20 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-91c7a337069b132413043d66ced69f20\"><\/div>\n<p>But Newsom signed into law Sunday <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/30\/california-passes-bill-preventing-huntington-beach-from-requiring-voter-id\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legislation<\/a> that was originally introduced in response to the Huntington Beach city council approving the measure prior to placing it on the ballot. The new law <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB1174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prohibits<\/a> &ldquo;a local government from enacting or enforcing any charter provision, ordinance, or regulation requiring a person to present identification for the purpose of voting or submitting a ballot at any polling place, vote center, or other location where ballots are cast or submitted, as specified.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The state previously sued Huntington Beach in April to prevent the will of the voters (in the name of &ldquo;democracy&rdquo;). California Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/california-sues-huntington-beach-over-voter-id-referendum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rob Bonta<\/a> sued the city claiming &ldquo;the right to freely cast your vote is the foundation of our democracy and Huntington Beach&rsquo;s voter ID policy flies in the face of this principle.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether the lawsuit will still be pursued. The Federalist has inquired with Bonta&rsquo;s office for a status update. <\/p>\n<p>Bonta had previously sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/system\/files\/attachments\/press-docs\/9-28-23%20HUNTINGTON%20BEACH%20VOTER%20ID%20BALLOT%20MEASURE_LETTER.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to city officials in September 2023 claiming the measure &ldquo;conflicts with state law&rdquo; and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/02\/if-democrats-love-democracy-why-do-they-attack-election-security-measures-voters-want\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">falsely alleged<\/a> voter ID measures &ldquo;serve to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democratic-law-firm-files-absentee-ballot-lawsuit-to-overturn-wisconsin-rule\/\" title=\"Democrat law firm sues to reverse Wisconsin absentee ballot rule.\">suppress voter participation<\/a>.&rdquo; Bonta told city officials to withdraw the measure or else Bonta would take &ldquo;action.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-cc78a6a7d50998718adc66cd83050780 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-cc78a6a7d50998718adc66cd83050780\"><\/div>\n<p>Bonta&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/bonta-huntington-beach-voter-id-lawsuit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suit<\/a> alleged Huntington Beach&rsquo;s voter ID provisions were &ldquo;preempted and invalid&rdquo; in matters in which &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-sues-huntington-beach-to-overturn-voter-id-measure-approved-by-voters\/\" title=\"California has filed a lawsuit against Huntington Beach challenging a voter-approved Voter ID measure\">local law conflicts<\/a> with state law reasonably tailored to the resolution of a statewide concern.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The suit <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/16\/california-sues-huntington-beach-to-overturn-voter-id-measure-approved-by-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also argued<\/a> the measure undermined the authority of the state legislature, &ldquo;placing the onus on registered voters to establish their eligibility to vote, and groundlessly challenging the right to vote.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates said in response to the suit that the city would fight to &ldquo;uphold and defend the will of the people,&rdquo; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/california-sues-huntington-beach-over-voter-id-referendum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Courthouse News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gates argued that state law (at the time the measure was adopted by the city), did not prohibit the city from adopting the ballot measure.
