Last \u2063week, America \u200cFirst Legal filed a federal lawsuit representing multiple families and the\u2063 City of Huntington Beach, challenging \u2064Assembly\u2064 Bill 1955, which was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. This law prohibits school officials from\u200d informing parents if their\u200d child chooses to adopt a different name or pronouns at school, undermining parental rights in sensitive matters concerning their \u200cchildren\u2019s\u2062 identities.<\/p>\n<p>The controversy intensified\u2063 after\u2064 a judge \u200bissued a\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-georgia-update-judge-issues-restraining-order-for-10-days-preventing-defendants-from-destroying-or-erasing-dominion-voting-machines\/\" title=\"BREAKING GEORGIA UPDATE: Judge Issues Restraining Order for 10 Days Preventing Defendants from Destroying or Erasing Dominion Voting Machines\">temporary restraining order<\/a> against \u200ca similar policy in the Chino Valley Unified\u2062 School District, which was\u200b later permanently blocked. Proponents \u2063of the parental notification policy argue \u2063that \u2062parents\u200d should be informed about significant changes in a child&#8217;s identity, paralleling the requirement of obtaining parental \u200cpermission \u2062for school trips. They\u2063 believe\u200d that parents, who are more likely to address their child&#8217;s\u2064 mental health\u200c needs,\u2064 should be involved in\u2064 such critical discussions, particularly since\u200c a significant \u200dpercentage of\u200b transgender-identifying adults report \u2062serious \u2064mental health struggles.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents\u200c of parental notification, including\u2064 Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta, label such measures as &#8220;forced outing,&#8221;\u2062 suggesting they could harm students who may \u200cnot be ready \u2062to share their identities with their parents. They emphasize the importance of a\u200d supportive home environment for LGBTQ+ youth. However, critics contend\u200d that the\u2064 labeling \u2063of these policies \u2064as discriminatory effectively denies parents\u2063 their \u2063rights and ignores the potential medical repercussions \u200dof social transitioning.<\/p>\n<p>Activists assert that\u200d social\u200b transitioning in schools does not\u2063 equate to medical transitioning, although the distinction is debated, as social \u2062changes can have significant psychological and medical implications\u2062 for minors. The ongoing legal battles reflect broader tensions\u200d regarding parental rights, LGBTQ+ youth support, and educational \u200bpolicies in California.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>California families are finally fighting back.&nbsp;Last week, America First Legal <a href=\"https:\/\/aflegal.org\/america-first-legal-sues-gavin-newsom-on-behalf-of-parents-and-the-city-of-huntington-beach-for-forcing-schools-to-hide-a-childs-gender-transition-from-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filed<\/a> a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of several California families and the City of Huntington Beach to block Assembly Bill 1955. The bill, which California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law in July, prohibits school districts from implementing any parental-notification policy requiring district teachers and staff to notify a child&rsquo;s parents if that child decides to go by a different name or different pronouns in school.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom&rsquo;s bill came after a judge, Michael Sachs, placed a temporary restraining order on Chino Valley Unified School District&rsquo;s parental-notification policy in 2023 and before that same judge <a href=\"https:\/\/edsource.org\/updates\/judge-permanently-blocks-chino-valley-unified-policy-to-disclose-gender-identity-to-parents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">permanently halted<\/a> the district&rsquo;s parental-notification policy just this month. That this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nba-social-justice-coalition-pushes-house-democrats-george-floyd-justice-in-policing-act\/\" title=\"NBA \u2018Social Justice Coalition\u2019 Pushes House Democrats\u2019 \u2018George Floyd Justice In Policing Act\u2019\">common-sense policy<\/a> has become so controversial reveals that activists like Newsom and Sachs are creating a system based on the idea that parents are guilty until proven innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, for most Americans, it seems obvious that teachers and other school staff should have to notify parents if their child seeks to change his or her so-called gender identity: If teachers have to notify parents and get signed permission slips to be able to take students on field trips, teachers should also have to notify parents if their child is choosing to go by a different name or wrong-sex pronouns. <\/p>\n<p>Especially seeing that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/report-section\/kff-the-washington-post-trans-survey-trans-in-america\/#:~:text=Isolation%20and%20mental%20health%20struggles,talk%20to%20about%20personal%20issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">78 percent<\/a> of transgender-identifying adults report that they had serious mental health issues as children, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/politically-neutral-school-policies-are-actually-racist-new-jersey-argues\/\" title=\"New Jersey claims politically neutral school policies are racist.\">parental notification policies<\/a> are in students&rsquo; best interests &mdash; a child who begins to identify as transgender will likely have mental health issues that his parents, not teachers, will be responsible for addressing. To cut those parents out of the loop, then, doesn&rsquo;t just deprive parents of their rights; it deprives the child of the mental health care his or her parents would otherwise secure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But radical activists have relabeled common-sense parental-notification policies as &ldquo;forced outing&rdquo; of transgender-identified students, assuming that such policies only exist to harm students who might feel &ldquo;unsafe&rdquo; telling their parents about their transgender identity. Newsom&rsquo;s bill, for instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1955\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">states<\/a>, &ldquo;Parents and families have an important role to play in the lives of young people. Studies confirm that LGBTQ+ youth thrive when they have parental support and feel safe sharing their full identities with them, but it can be harmful to force young people to share their full identities before they are ready.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>California Attorney General Rob Bonta went one step <a href=\"https:\/\/edsource.org\/updates\/judge-permanently-blocks-chino-valley-unified-policy-to-disclose-gender-identity-to-parents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">further<\/a> in celebrating the California judge&rsquo;s decision to ban the Chino Valley Unified District from enforcing a parental-notification policy: &ldquo;Let this decision send a clear message to other school districts that have passed or are contemplating similar policies: discriminatory policies will not be tolerated in our educational institutions.&rdquo; By labeling parental notification &ldquo;discriminatory,&rdquo; activists in our government have decided that minors who are not old enough to sign a form are somehow able to consent to medical decisions with lifelong repercussions.<\/p>\n<p>While activists argue that a child who decides to go by opposite-sex pronouns in school is only socially transitioning, not medically transitioning (i.e., taking wrong-sex hormones or undergoing transgender surgery), this distinction doesn&rsquo;t mean social transition is without medical consequences. As Ilya Shapiro, Leor Sapir, and John Ketcham <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/article\/correcting-the-record-on-social-transition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> for the Manhattan Institute&rsquo;s City Journal, &ldquo;[F]ar from a neutral act or polite convention, social transition is an active mental-health intervention that poses serious risks to children and adolescents. &hellip;Researchers and clinicians treating gender-distressed youths have similarly expressed concern that social transition can &hellip; unnecessarily make accepting one&rsquo;s sex and coming to terms with one&rsquo;s body more difficult.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Although medical research has found that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwf.org\/2024\/09\/08\/kids-would-outgrow-gender-disorders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overwhelming majority<\/a> of children who experience confusion about their sex eventually grow out of it, early social transition can cement children into an identity that, in the absence of affirmation, would have been a phase. Moreover, social transition often sets transgender-identified people, regardless of age, <a href=\"https:\/\/donoharmmedicine.org\/gender-ideology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on track<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/father-arrested-jailed-for-contempt-after-referring-to-his-daughter-as-she\/\" title=\"Father Arrested, Jailed For Contempt After Referring To His Daughter As \u2018She\u2019\">taking cross-sex hormones<\/a> and undergoing transgender surgery. By making it illegal for districts to implement transparent policies, California is effectively allowing schools to make medical decisions for children while evading parents entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Activist policymakers like Gavin Newsom consider parents an afterthought not only in their children&rsquo;s educations, but in their children&rsquo;s lives more generally.
