(AP Photo\/Ted Shaffrey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Both men face serious corruption allegations that appear to be backed by strong evidence.<\/p>\n<p>But the indictment of Adams comes against the backdrop of a DOJ that has wielded particularly aggressive law enforcement against some of the Democrats&rsquo; ideological and political enemies, such as former president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/major-abortion-groups-assemble-file-lawsuit-over-unthinkable-texas-law-allowing-americans-to-sue-abortion-clinics-doctors\/\" title=\"Major Abortion Groups Assemble, File Lawsuit Over \u2018Unthinkable\u2019 Texas Law Allowing Americans To Sue Abortion Clinics, Doctors\">anti-abortion advocates<\/a>, and Jan. 6 rioters.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is interesting that most of these charges are eight years old. Why weren&rsquo;t they prosecuted and done then? Because the Democrats needed to have him win an election,&rdquo; Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/video\/6362505675112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a> Thursday. &ldquo;Now they don&rsquo;t want their guy in office. Because why? He stood up to President Biden.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Adams drew the ire of some fellow Democrats when he began speaking out last year against the Biden-Harris administration&rsquo;s immigration policies amid a massive influx of migrants to New York City.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic mayor accused President Joe Biden of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/2775503\/eric-adams-says-biden-has-abandoned-the-migrant-crisis-across-the-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> abandoning the city<\/a> as it struggled to manage the consequences of the Biden-Harris border crisis. Adams was among the first prominent Democrats to criticize the Biden-Harris administration for its handling of immigration. His criticism shined a spotlight on a problem that had remained a sole Republican complaint for years, and it<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2584728\/eric-adams-shows-bidens-border-policies-vexing-democrats-as-well-as-gop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> helped create the bipartisan scrutiny<\/a> of immigration that has turned the matter into one of voters&rsquo; top concerns this election.<\/p>\n<p>For that, Adams became a target for the Biden-Harris administration, according to some Republican critics.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Eric Adams did his job by daring to put New Yorkers first, in the face of Biden and Kamala&rsquo;s migrant invasion,&rdquo; Mike Davis, a former clerk to Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. &ldquo;So Eric Adams now faces Biden and Kamala&rsquo;s politicized and weaponized Justice Department.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ unsealed an indictment Thursday that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3167424\/eric-adams-indictment-alleges-decade-of-corruption-bribery-by-foreign-nationals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"charged Adams\">charged Adams<\/a> with bribery, fraud, and soliciting donations from a foreign national. I have been fighting injustice my entire life,&rdquo; Adams said.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats pointed to Adams&rsquo;s indictment as evidence that the DOJ is not exclusively targeting Trump and other Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Right can&rsquo;t have it both ways,&rdquo; Democratic strategist Jon Reinish told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. &ldquo;[Biden] can&rsquo;t both be a stumbling, senile, incompetent grandpa or great grandpa, while at the same time this, you know, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-smells-blood-in-new-york-after-eric-adams-indictment-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"GOP smells blood in New York after Eric Adams indictment - Washington Examiner\">extraordinarily powerful evil genius<\/a> who&rsquo;s controlling everything, like guys, which is it? Make a decision.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dismissed questions about a politicized indictment Thursday, saying, &ldquo;The DOJ is handling this case independently. I&rsquo;m not going to go beyond that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>But Republican critics have raised concerns about the timing of the criminal investigation into Adams and his inner circle, which appeared to begin around the time his immigration criticism generated national headlines.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the federal investigation into Adams began in November, pro-Trump Rep. Brandon Williams (R-NY)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/11\/15\/eric-adams-trump-fbi-new-york-00127490\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggested<\/a>&nbsp;the timing was an &ldquo;interest&rdquo; of his in light of the mayor&rsquo;s commentary at the time about Biden&rsquo;s immigration policies.<\/p>\n<p>But Williams told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> on Thursday that he believes Adams should resign. Adams has made clear he has no plans to so.<\/p>\n<p>Other Republican media commentators connected Adams&rsquo;s defiance of Democrats and his indictment more closely.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This was when NYC&rsquo;s Eric Adams made himself a target. (AP Photo\/Julia Demaree Nikhinson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Andrew Cherkasky, a New York-based lawyer and former federal prosecutor, told the&nbsp;<em>Washington Examiner&nbsp;<\/em>that &ldquo;two things can be true at once&rdquo; about Adams&rsquo;s criminal case.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It can be true that he potentially violated the law, as indicated in the indictment, and it can be true that the Democratic Party is unfairly targeting him and have ostracized him as a result of his criticism of the of the terrible immigration crisis that our country is in that is caused obviously and apparently by the agenda of the Left,&rdquo; Cherkasky said. &ldquo;And so he certainly, I think, has a valid complaint that his fellow Democrats are targeting him.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Cherkasky noted, however, that federal investigators appeared to have collected substantial evidence against the New York City mayor. <\/p>\n<p>Cuellar, another Democrat who faced charges after speaking out against the Biden-Harris administration, also raised concerns about being targeted by the DOJ.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Cuellar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasstandard.org\/stories\/henry-cuellar-south-texas-congressman-representative-democrat-doj-indictments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"said\">said<\/a> that he &ldquo;certainly question[s] the motives&rdquo; of the DOJ choosing to raid his home on the eve of a tough primary race in his district in 2022 in which Democrats had the chance to send a more left-wing member to Congress in his stead.
