Following the outbreak, which \u200cwas linked to unsanitary conditions at a Boar\u2019s \u2062Head facility in Virginia, Connecticut\u2019s Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Rosa\u200b DeLauro \u200chave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ftc-hires-anti-musk-activist-amid-agencys-investigation-of-twitter\/\" title=\"FTC Hires Anti-Musk Activist Amid Agency\u2019s Investigation of Twitter\">urged federal agencies<\/a>, including the USDA and DOJ, to investigate the company for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-drivers-race-to-grab-cash-that-fell-out-of-armored-truck-on-california-freeway\/\" title=\"WATCH: Drivers Race to Grab Cash that Fell Out of Armored Truck on California Freeway\">potential criminal charges<\/a>. They \u2063criticized Boar&#8217;s\u200d Head for not addressing repeated violations of health\u200b protocols, calling \u2064for immediate \u200caction \u2064to ensure\u200c consumer\u200d safety.<\/p>\n<p>The facility was \u2064closed indefinitely after inspections revealed serious cleanliness issues, such as\u2062 insects, \u2062mold, and outdated\u200d cleaning\u2064 practices. \u2064The new sanitation manager, Terrence\u200b Boyce, \u2064reported \u2063facing \u200bresistance when trying to implement\u200d new cleaning methods and was subsequently terminated after only eight months in\u200c the role. Fifty-nine people have been hospitalized across 19 states related to the crisis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>U.S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Justice, Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Richard-Blumenthal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Richard Blumenthal<\/a> (D-CT) and Rep. (AP Photo\/Stephanie Nano)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;It is unacceptable that Boar&rsquo;s Head did not take sufficient action to rectify these conditions that resulted in repeated violations for similar issues,&rdquo; the Democrats wrote in their letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. &ldquo;The time for action is long overdue, and we urge your agencies to work together to seek immediate justice for impacted consumers and to prevent this from happening again.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3137627\/everything-about-listeria-boars-head-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BOAR&rsquo;S HEAD&rsquo;S LISTERIA OUTBREAK<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Board&rsquo;s Head factory in Jarratt, Virginia was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3153872\/boars-head-closes-facility-responsible-listeria-outbreak-discontinues-liverwurst\/\" title>closed<\/a> indefinitely last week after an investigation found their production process was the reason for the widespread outbreak. The company announced they would be implementing a worldwide food safety program. <\/p>\n<p>The USDA was aware of the outdated practices after performing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3150943\/usda-flagged-safety-health-violations-boars-head-plant-before-listeria-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>inspections<\/a> in September and October 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/about-fsis\/freedom-information-act-foia\/frequently-requested-records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>reporting<\/a> that the facility had insects, mold, &ldquo;blood in puddles on the floor,&rdquo; and terrible facilities with holes in the walls, rusty equipment, dripping condensation, and product residue on surfaces. Facility management was told to take immediate corrective action.<\/p>\n<p>The factory hired a new head of sanitation in January 2023, Terrence Boyce, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wric.com\/news\/taking-action\/jarratt-plant-sanitation-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>told<\/a> ABC 8 News that the cleaning practices in Boar&rsquo;s Head were outdated.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As I tried to establish different ways of cleaning, there was a lot of pushback,&rdquo; Boyce said. &ldquo;Pushback on old methodology, things they used to do that nobody does anymore &hellip; If you push against management, I think you become a target.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Boyce said the pushback led to controversy that ended in him being terminated from his position after holding the job for only eight months. <\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title> <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3137627\/everything-about-listeria-boars-head-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>listeria outbreak<\/a> has been deemed the largest outbreak in the nation since the cantaloupe listeria outbreak in 2011, <a href=\"http:\/\/More%20illnesses%20and%20deaths%20in%20Listeria%20outbreak%20linked%20to%20...%20%20Centers%20for%20Disease%20Control%20and%20Prevention%20%7C%20CDC%20(.gov)%20https:\/\/www.cdc.gov%20%E2%80%BA%20s0828-listeria-outbreak-deli-meats\" title>according<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/cdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>Center for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. Deaths have occurred in New York, Florida, Tennessee, New Mexico, South Carolina, Virginia, Illinois, and New Jersey.
