Bird&#8217;s office maintains that\u200d Sanchez-Vasquez is a legal resident of \u200cthe U.S. but knowingly signed a voter registration form swearing he was a \u200dU.S. citizen. \u2063This \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-illegal-immigrants-charged-with-kidnapping-teen-girl-from-small-town\/\" title=\"5 Undocumented Immigrants Accused of Abducting Teenager from Small Town\">case highlights ongoing concerns<\/a>\u200c among Republicans and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-j6-show-trial-is-lying-about-election-fraud\/\" title=\"The J6 Show Trial Is Lying About Election \u2018Fraud\u2019\">election integrity advocates<\/a> \u2062regarding noncitizen voting, which they argue undermines electoral integrity. Recent legislative efforts, such as the SAFE Act aimed at addressing these issues, have faced political hurdles, as evidenced by its failure to pass in Congress. While some\u2063 media outlets\u2063 assert that noncitizen voting \u200dis \u2063rare \u2063and typically\u200c unintentional, local officials believe that Sanchez-Vasquez was aware of his ineligibility to vote. Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate emphasized the importance\u200d of ensuring that only eligible voters participate in elections, expressing a \u2063commitment \u200bto maintaining \u2062the integrity of the \u2062voting process.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird just brought voter fraud charges against a noncitizen for voting.<\/p>\n<p>Bird <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov\/newsroom\/iowa-attorney-generals-office-to-prosecute-non-citizen-for-illegal-voting-in-marshall-county\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charged<\/a> Jorge Oscar Sanchez-Vasquez with two counts of election misconduct last week &mdash; &ldquo;registering to vote and illegally voting on the same day, July 16, 2024, in a special election for the Marshalltown City Council,&rdquo; as outlined in a Friday press release. Bird&rsquo;s office says Sanchez-Vasquez legally resides in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The charges come after Republicans and election integrity advocates have been sounding the alarm about noncitizen voting &mdash; one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/06\/democrats-are-terrified-of-gop-plan-to-protect-u-s-election-from-noncitizen-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">primary drivers<\/a> behind the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/19\/government-funding-bill-election-integrity-implode-in-u-s-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killed by both parties<\/a> in the House, along with the government funding measure to which it was attached. There have also been statewide efforts to strengthen election integrity safeguards, such as the New Hampshire no-excuse voter ID and citizenship <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/17\/new-hampshire-governor-signs-no-excuse-voter-id-and-citizenship-law-but-it-wont-matter-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law<\/a> recently enacted &mdash; though, that will not take effect until after this year&rsquo;s election.<\/p>\n<p>The Federalist has also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/12\/yes-foreign-nationals-have-voted-in-u-s-elections-and-many-more-could-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/18\/exclusive-new-report-details-growing-threat-of-noncitizens-voting-in-u-s-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">growing threat<\/a> of noncitizen voting, particularly in light of the border crisis. Earlier this month, for example, The Federalist reported that the federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/10\/federal-data-thousands-of-illegals-are-registered-to-vote-but-in-21-years-doj-has-only-prosecuted-35\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only prosecuted 35 cases of illegal aliens voting<\/a> in U.S. elections in 21 years, despite the fact that untold millions have poured across the southern border at the same time &mdash; and that at least tens-of-thousands had been illegally registered to vote.<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez-Vasquez allegedly signed a voter registration form swearing under oath he is a U.S. citizen, the Des Moines Register <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/09\/20\/iowa-attorney-general-to-prosecute-voter-fraud\/75311477007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/05\/us\/politics\/immigrant-noncitizen-voting-republicans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corporate media<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/08\/30\/nx-s1-5091032\/noncitizens-voting-election-gop-texas-tennessee-alabama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maintains<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/voting-immigrants-noncitizen-trump-republicans-2024-1c65429c152c2a10514b5156eacf9ca7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noncitizen voting<\/a> is not a real issue, that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/analysis-opinion\/noncitizen-voting-already-illegal-and-vanishingly-rare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already illegal<\/a>, and that, even if noncitizens vote, it is probably because they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/02\/26\/697848417\/some-noncitizens-do-wind-up-registered-to-vote-but-usually-not-on-purpose\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accidentally<\/a> registered, Marshall County Sheriff Joel Phillips said that the investigation indicates Sanchez-Vasquez &ldquo;knew what he was doing,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesrepublican.com\/news\/todays-news\/2024\/09\/county-sheriff-attorney-general-investigating-alleged-case-of-election-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the Times-Republican.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He had full knowledge (that) he was not valid to vote,&rdquo; Phillips reportedly said, adding that &ldquo;[t]his typically does not happen.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, a Republican, discussed noncitizen voting in a Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowapbs.org\/shows\/iowapress\/iowa-press\/episode\/11526\/what-you-need-know-about-voting-november\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">episode<\/a> of  Iowa Press, &ldquo;a few hours before the charges against the Marshalltown man were announced,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radioiowa.com\/2024\/09\/21\/marshalltown-man-whos-not-a-u-s-citizen-charged-with-election-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the outlet Radio Iowa. &ldquo;[T]he law says pretty clearly you have to be a U.S. citizen to vote,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;We have voter ID. So, we are establishing a baseline of you have to prove who you are. We also are working with our partners, we work with the court system, there are various partners who help us identify those folks who are here legally but not U.S. citizens.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[O]ur role is to make sure only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/desantis-crushes-trump-wait-trump-smashes-desantis-polls-are-useless-nowadays\/\" title=\"DeSantis Crushes Trump! Wait, Trump Smashes DeSantis! Polls Are Useless Nowadays\">eligible voters vote<\/a>. Even one, two, five, a hundred, whatever the number might be is not acceptable. So, we&rsquo;ll keep trying to make sure we&rsquo;re protecting and keeping that away,&rdquo; he continued. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t believe in Iowa we have any of those types of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/huge-georgia-election-lawsuit-dominion-software-was-accessed-by-chinese-and-iranian-agents-to-manipulate-election\/\" title=\"UPDATE: HUGE! Georgia Election Lawsuit: Dominion Software was Accessed by Chinese and Iranian Agents to Manipulate Election\">massive voter fraud<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In Marshall County, registered voters must present a valid photo identification card, and &ldquo;[v]oter information which the county has will confirm a person&rsquo;s eligibility,&rdquo; as detailed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesrepublican.com\/news\/todays-news\/2024\/09\/county-sheriff-attorney-general-investigating-alleged-case-of-election-fraud\/\">Times-Republican<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An unregistered voter can register to vote on election day but must additionally provide proof of residency and answer questions about whether they are a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old by election day, according to the outlet. The signature line of the document warns those registering that they are affirming that they are telling the truth under penalty of perjury.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Times-Republican, the Marshall County auditor&rsquo;s office is set to include more security measures to prevent voter fraud.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;On election day, we will have an extra step in the process,&rdquo; County Auditor Nan Benson said, according to the outlet. &ldquo;We will be adding another set of eyes to look over registration forms. That will include absentee voting, which begins Oct. 16.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If someone is voting when they are not supposed to be, it will be investigated and turned over to law enforcement,&rdquo; she reportedly added. &ldquo;We are not going to ignore it. It will not be set aside.
