Kathy Hochul to declare the rare mosquito-borne illness an <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ny.gov\/diseases\/communicable\/eastern_equine_encephalitis\/docs\/2024-09_eee_declaration.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imminent threat to public health.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The death that was reported Monday in Ulster County is apparently the second death from the disease in the United States this year after a New Hampshire resident infected with the eastern equine encephalitis virus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/new-england-health-officials-institute-6-pm-curfew-disease-concerns-residents-furious\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ten human cases of the disease, also known as EEE, had been reported nationwide as of Sept. 17, before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-mexican-drug-cartel-leader-transferred-new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a> case was confirmed, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/eastern-equine-encephalitis\/data-maps\/current-year-data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Ulster County death was the first from the disease in New York state since 2015. There were just seven cases nationally last year but more than 30 in 2019, a historically bad year.<\/p>\n<p>There are no vaccines or treatments for EEE, and about 30 percent of people who become infected die.
