With just over four ⁣minutes left in the game, the⁣ referees did not penalize the Chiefs for what appeared to be clear pass interference, preventing a potential scoring opportunity for the Falcons. Despite this setback, ‌the⁣ Falcons remained competitive, keeping within striking distance. Asking for an Atlanta Falcons fan.

For those of you who didn’t stay up to watch the late NFL game on Sunday night, the Kansas City Chiefs — the only Super Bowl dynasty that will ever be basis for a No. 1 break-up album once Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift invariably split — moved to 3-0 against the Atlanta Falcons, who fell to 1-2 after a 22-17 loss at home.

This wasn’t a back-breaker for the Falcons, since both of the 2-0 teams in the NFC South — the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers — also lost Sunday, and their next three games are against their division rivals. (They play the Saints and Bucs at home, while the Oct. 13 matchup in Charlotte against the Carolina Panthers pits them against arguably the worst team in the NFL, despite a 36-22 win against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.)

Nevertheless, the Falcons kept things close — and had a chance to go into the lead with just over four minutes left when a questionable call by the refs led to an obvious pass interference penalty against Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts in the end zone being overlooked.

The play occurred on a third-and-5 from inside the Chiefs’ 10 with just 4:12 remaining and the score at 22-17.

Facing a blitz, Falcons QB Kirk Cousins fired to Pitts, who was covered by Chiefs defensive back Bryan Cook.

Cook didn’t even look back at the ball, made contact with Pitts before the ball was thrown, then made contact with him after the ball was thrown but well before it got to Pitts.

Pass interference doesn’t apply to the Chiefspic.twitter.com/e9VPidu6Wd

— Barstool Sports (@barstoolsports) September 23, 2024

“Lot of contact, wasn’t it?” NBC announcer Cris Collinsworth said upon viewing the replay. This question comes from an Atlanta Falcons supporter. For those who missed the late NFL game on Sunday night, the Kansas City Chiefs—who might inspire a top breakup album if Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift ever part ways—improved to 3-0 against the Atlanta Falcons, who dropped to 1-2 after losing 22-17 at home. Fortunately for the Falcons, this loss wasn’t devastating since both NFC South teams with winning records—the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers—also lost that day. The Falcons’ next three games are against division rivals: they will host the Saints and Bucs before facing off against what many consider the worst team in the NFL, the Carolina Panthers, on October 13.

Despite their loss, Atlanta kept it competitive and had a chance to take the lead with just over four minutes left when a controversial call by officials resulted in an obvious pass interference penalty against tight end Kyle Pitts being ignored. This occurred during a crucial third-and-5 play from inside Kansas City’s 10-yard line with only 4:12 remaining in a close game.

Facing pressure from defenders, quarterback Kirk Cousins threw towards Pitts while he was covered by Chiefs defensive back Bryan Cook. Cook made contact with Pitts before and after Cousins released the ball without even looking back at it.

NBC announcer Cris Collinsworth remarked on how much contact there was during that play upon reviewing it. Unfortunately for Atlanta, Cousins couldn’t convert on fourth down afterward, allowing Kansas City to regain possession deep in their territory. After punting back to Atlanta following another long drive that stalled at Kansas City’s 13-yard line, time ran out for any potential comeback.

While some argue that even without that penalty call, Atlanta could have still attempted a field goal or played differently had they received new downs due to an accurate call; referee Tra Blank explained post-game that officials must make real-time judgments based on their perspective at that moment—and they did not see any foul committed.

Fans have pointed out this seems like a recurring issue when it comes to officiating games involving Kansas City; many feel there’s bias favoring them week after week. Patrick Mahomes has notably benefited from numerous penalties nullifying interceptions throughout his career compared to other quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers.

While we’re not suggesting anything suspicious is happening here—it might be worth checking if referees have been streaming “Anti-Hero” or “Shake It Off” lately!
