Additionally, it bans \u2062online platforms from sending notifications\u2064 to minors \u200dduring school hours and after midnight. <\/p>\n<p>The law defines &#8220;addictive feed&#8221; \u200das any content that is recommended or prioritized for users based on their\u200b personal information, and it requires platforms to report annually on the\u2063 usage of minors and the \u200dnumber of users who have provided verifiable parental consent. Gavin Newsom signed into law Friday a bill banning &ldquo;addictive&rdquo; social media content for minors.<\/p>\n<p>The Protecting Our Kids from Social Media Addiction Act prevents social media companies from &ldquo;knowingly providing an addictive feed to a minor without parental consent,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2024\/09\/20\/governor-newsom-signs-landmark-bill-to-protect-kids-from-social-media-addiction-takes-action-on-other-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to a press release from the governor&rsquo;s office.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">law<\/a> also prohibits online platforms from issuing notifications to minors during school hours and after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Every parent knows the harm social media addiction can inflict on their children &ndash; isolation from human contact, stress and anxiety, and endless hours wasted late into the night,&rdquo; Newsom said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With this bill, California is helping protect children and teenagers from purposely designed features that feed these destructive habits.
