Known as Proposition 36, the Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act would enable felony charges for specific drug possession cases and thefts valued under $950 for individuals with two prior similar convictions. Additionally, it would enhance prison sentences for other drug-related and theft offenses, partially reversing the effects of 2014’s Proposition 47. A recent poll from the Public Policy Institute of California indicates that likely voters favor this measure by a significant margin of 71% to 26%.

Some Democratic leaders in the state have opposed the measure, claiming it would reinstate ineffective policies and are working on a counter-proposal against Prop 36. However, despite this opposition from certain Democrats, there is bipartisan support for the initiative; voters across party lines seem inclined to approve it in November according to the survey results.

The poll reveals that among Republicans surveyed, support for Prop 36 stands at an impressive 85% compared to just 13% against it. Independents show a favorable response as well with a support rate of 73% versus 24%, while Democrats back the measure at a rate of 63% compared to 33%. This ballot proposition emerges amid various efforts by California officials to address rising crime rates that have severely impacted major cities over recent years. In Oakland specifically, Governor Gavin Newsom has taken an active role in crime management as both mayor and district attorney face recall elections this November.

Another significant ballot measure aims to repeal an outdated constitutional provision defining marriage strictly between one man and one woman; this proposal enjoys backing from approximately 68% of likely voters surveyed across party lines.

In terms of upcoming presidential and Senate races within California, Democratic candidates Vice President Kamala Harris and Representative Adam Schiff hold substantial leads over their Republican challengers.
