The legislation, known as the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act and introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), passed with a vote of 266 to 158, receiving support from 51 Democrats alongside all Republicans. If enacted, this law would modify the Immigration and Nationality Act to classify “aliens” convicted of or involved in sex crimes or domestic violence as “inadmissible and deportable.”

Mace, who has been vocal about her party’s treatment of women, expressed her frustration in an op-ed for the Post and Courier last week, criticizing politicians who use questionable data to excuse illegal immigrants accused of serious crimes against women and children. She emphasized that H.R.7909 represents common sense—a quality she feels is lacking in Washington—and aims to ensure that individuals previously convicted of serious offenses are either denied entry or swiftly deported.

During discussions surrounding the bill’s importance before the vote, House Republican leaders highlighted its significance at their weekly press conference. Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) criticized “woke prosecutors” for prioritizing certain arrests over others involving crimes against women. He urged all members on the House floor to support the bill while warning Democrats that opposing it could lead them to face backlash from constituents concerned about crime in their communities.

Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) also criticized Democrats for focusing on issues like abortion while seemingly ignoring immigration policies that allow sexual offenders into the country. He challenged claims from Democrats suggesting that this legislation was redundant or unnecessary.

In contrast, House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jerry Nadler (D-NY) described the bill as a Republican strategy aimed at scapegoating immigrants rather than addressing real issues effectively. He argued that existing laws already cover these offenses adequately and warned that overly broad definitions within this new legislation could lead to unintended consequences affecting victims themselves.

Mace responded during debates by sharing her personal experience as a rape survivor and reiterated her stance: any illegal immigrant should be removed from the country regardless of circumstances.

This bill is part of broader Republican efforts targeting immigration policies ahead of upcoming elections while also addressing funding measures expected for discussion later in Congress regarding government spending resolutions combined with other legislative proposals aimed at restricting voting rights for noncitizens

[538
6184,41192,32165,41193,32076
post-2343128","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-washington-examiner","tag-deportation","tag-house-bill","tag-illegal-immigrants","tag-sex-offenses","tag-washington-examiner
["GET
