In March, Manchin declared that he would not support any judicial nominee from President Joe Biden who did not have Republican backing, creating a challenge for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who holds a slim majority. However, last Thursday, Manchin deviated from this stance by voting to advance the nomination of Kevin Ritz, a Tennessee judge opposed by all Republican senators from his state. He described this vote as an isolated incident and attributed it to what he termed Republican obstinacy regarding the nomination. “No, no,” Manchin insisted on Wednesday. “The Ritz nomination was just a one-time situation.” He reaffirmed his commitment to bipartisanship in judicial nominations while acknowledging that sometimes the qualifications and experience of candidates must be considered.
