The program sought to provide 20% in down payment assistance to illegal immigrants, up to $150,000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The program would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/newsom-says-virtual-learning-has-been-brutal-his-kids-have-been-in-school-since-november\/\" title=\"Newsom Says Virtual Learning Has Been Brutal. His Kids Have Been in School Since November.\">receive state funding<\/a> as well as money from the California Housing Finance Agency, which generates revenue through mortgage loans rather than through taxpayer dollars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Democratic state Rep. Joaquin Arambula, who authored the bill, defended the proposal by arguing it specifically requires applicants to meet requirements set by the Federal National Mortgage Association. Those requirements include providing a taxpayer identification number or Social Security number to prove they pay state taxes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, Republicans in California opposed the bill, arguing the state can&rsquo;t afford to use government funds for illegal immigrants. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/3146665\/newsom-slaps-down-undocumented-immigrant-housing-bill-passed-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title>ultimately vetoed the bill<\/a>, citing that same lack of funding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other Republicans, such as Biggs, argued such a program would only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cotton-bidens-border-crisis-is-a-superspreader-event\/\" title=\"Cotton: \u2018Biden\u2019s Border Crisis Is A Superspreader Event\u2019\">encourage illegal immigration<\/a> by providing incentives for those who are in the U.S. illegally and seeking housing assistance.
