With or without that made field goal, the Eagles would’ve lost had the Falcons scored a responding touchdown.

Given that, it would’ve made far more sense for the Eagles to try and convert the three yards and kill the clock.

The ESPN analytics guru also delved a bit into psychology, arguing that “opponents are irrationally conservative down 3.” He’s basically saying that team’s will almost always play for a tie when down three, as opposed to going for a 7-point touchdown-and-PAT when down six.

Walder also correctly predicted that the Falcons and star quarterback Kirk Cousins “will go for the win now”:

The entire game-winning drive from Kirk Cousins and the @AtlantaFalcons. #ATLvsPHI pic.twitter.com/7ms5Esas7b

— NFL (@NFL) September 17, 2024

The 1-1 Eagles won’t have to wait long to get back on a winning track, as the team plays just six days from Monday, on Sept. 22., when Philadelphia travels to face the undefeated New Orleans Saints.

The 1-1 Falcons, meanwhile, also have just six days to recuperate, but at least get to stay home, when Atlanta hosts the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

* Name

*

* Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

     function firefly_sc() { if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){ console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined'); } grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) { var opts={ action: 'firefly_sc_submit', name: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value, : document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value, message: document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value, post_id: firefly_post_id, cap_token: token } var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ]; for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! On Monday, long-suffering Philadelphia sports enthusiasts faced that heart-wrenching feeling once more, largely attributing the blame to Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni. The Eagles fell to the Atlanta Falcons 22-21 in what many consider a significant coaching failure. To provide some context, ESPN’s win probability models had given the Eagles a staggering 97.6% chance of winning. However, the Falcons capitalized on that slim 2.4% chance due in large part to several critical mistakes made by Sirianni during crucial moments.

After falling behind 15-10 late in the third quarter, the Eagles quickly responded with a touchdown and two-point conversion, taking an 18-15 lead into the fourth quarter. With this narrow advantage, they attempted to run down the clock effectively until reaching the two-minute warning.

This is where key errors emerged. With just 1:46 remaining and Atlanta out of timeouts, Philadelphia faced a manageable 3rd-and-3 situation that could have sealed their victory if converted; even failing would have allowed them to run down more time by running the ball instead of passing it—something many expected them to do given their position. Instead, quarterback Jalen Hurts opted for a pass intended for star running back Saquon Barkley—who dropped it.

This poor decision was compounded when Sirianni chose to kick a field goal on fourth down instead of attempting another conversion attempt—a move criticized as “sneaky big error” by ESPN analytics writer Seth Walder. He pointed out that statistically speaking, trying for another conversion would have increased their chances of winning by about five percent.

Even if you disregard advanced analytics or find five percent insignificant, simpler math reveals flaws in Sirianni’s logic: scoring three points with a field goal didn’t significantly change their situation since it remained a one-possession game; they still risked losing if Atlanta scored again regardless of whether they had kicked or not.

Given these circumstances, attempting to convert those three yards and keep possession while draining more clock would have been wiser strategy-wise as opponents tend toward conservative play when trailing by three points rather than going all-in for seven when behind six points—a prediction Walder accurately made regarding how Atlanta would approach their final drive led by quarterback Kirk Cousins.

The now 1-1 Eagles will look for redemption soon as they face off against undefeated New Orleans Saints on September 22nd while also at .500 are Falcons who will host reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs just six days later

[33651
4024,6733,8224
post-2342397","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-coach","tag-controversy","tag-eagles
["GET
