The article lists states mandating paid time‍ off, ‍unpaid time, and those lacking ⁣any requirement. States like ‌Alaska, Arizona, and California provide paid time off of varying hours, while others, like Alabama and Georgia, offer unpaid time. ‍Additionally, states such as Hawaii and Washington are currently considering law changes to provide ⁣paid time off. This ⁤situation illustrates the patchwork approach to voting time off across the country leading up to the upcoming elections.

What to know about Election Day paid time off in your state

As early voting gets underway and ballots begin to be mailed out ahead of the general election, millions of people still plan to vote on Nov. 5.

In some countries, voting is compulsory, and citizens are given the day off to cast their ballots. In certain countries, voting is mandatory, and citizens receive a day off to participate. However, in the United States, Election Day is not recognized as a federal holiday, nor is there an obligation for employers to provide time off for employees to vote. Various congressional proposals have been made to ensure that workers across the country have adequate time to cast their votes. For instance, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced the “Democracy Day Act” in 2018 aimed at establishing Election Day as a federal holiday. Additionally, House Democrats proposed the Time Off to Vote Act in 2022 which would require employers to grant at least two hours of paid leave for federal elections. Unfortunately, none of these initiatives have been enacted yet.

Despite this lack of legislation at the national level, there is significant public support for making Election Day a holiday; a Pew Research Center survey from 2018 indicated that 65% of Americans favor this change. Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org stated that “Election Day really definitely does need to be a holiday,” emphasizing its importance in fostering civic engagement.

While efforts at the federal level have stalled, numerous states do mandate some form of time off for voting or are considering such measures.
