It is grave,” Francis said, according to CBS.

“Grave” in this case isn’t just another adjective. In Catholic terms, it’s a deliberate defiance of divine law. Coming from the pope, that’s a big, big deal.

But for many conservative Catholic Americans, the question is not the treatment of “migrants,” but the treatment of the country they’re entering.

And being in favor of upholding American immigration law — which includes deporting those who come to the country illegally and stay here illegally (not to mention committing horrendous crimes while being here illegally) — does not mean being “against life.”

It means being in favor of upholding the laws as they are enacted in the democratic republic of the United States of America.

The virulent opposition to illegal immigration among conservatives and the Republican Party is not based on opposition to the “immigration” part of that — it’s to the “illegal” part.

No country is, or should be, more welcoming to legal immigration than a country literally created by immigration.

For Democratic “Catholics,” though, including President Joe Biden and tens of millions of others, the pope’s comments about abortion should be a different matter.

“Whether you like the word or not, it is a killing,” he said, according to CBS. “It is an assassination, and on this we should be clear.”

There’s not a lot of wiggle room there. There are, no doubt, countless millions of American Catholics who have made their peace with the infanticide known as “abortion,” no matter what the church’s official position on the matter is.

(The ostensibly Catholic Biden’s obscene craven caving to the left wing of his party on the subject is only the most public example of sacrificing morality to political expedience. He’s far from alone.)

Since the judicial monstrosity of Roe v. Wade in 1973, American culture has been steeped in the idea that abortion is not only an acceptable option, it is an actual “right” guaranteed by the Constitution.

The Supreme Court’s 2022 decision overturning Roe didn’t change that — and it’s not going to change overnight.

The evil done by Justice Harry Blackmun and his six fellow justices will live long after them.

But the pope’s words about abortion can’t be fogged with a semantic dispute as they can when it comes to “migrants” and whether they’re “legal” or “illegal.”

There is no doubt there are times when “killing” and “assassination” are justified — the concept of a “just war” is part of the official Catholic catechism. But the <a href="https://www.conservativenewsdaily.net/breaking-news/roe-v-wade-in-serious-danger-as-supreme-court-hears-challenge-to-mississippi-abortion-ban/" title="Roe v. Despite the Democratic Party’s unwavering support for abortion—a practice that Catholic doctrine equates with murder—he has openly shown his disapproval of conservative views. However, when he addressed the U.S. presidential election during an in-flight interview on Friday, he adopted a nuanced stance that may not satisfy either political side but could prompt reflection among many voters, particularly those on the left.

As reported by CBS News, when asked how American voters should choose between Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris—who is known for her strong pro-abortion stance—and former President Donald Trump, who advocates for deporting undocumented immigrants, Francis suggested a moral equivalence between them. He stated that both are “against life,” referring to Harris’s position on abortion and Trump’s immigration policies. He remarked that one must select “the lesser of two evils,” although he did not specify which candidate fits this description.

Francis emphasized the gravity of issues surrounding migration and stated that rejecting migrants’ rights and opportunities is a serious sin in Catholic teaching. His use of “grave” signifies a significant violation of divine law—a serious matter coming from the pope. However, many conservative Catholics focus more on how migrants affect their country rather than solely on their treatment as individuals seeking entry.

Supporters of strict immigration laws argue that advocating for enforcement does not equate to being “against life.” They believe it reflects adherence to laws established within America’s democratic framework. The Republican Party’s strong opposition to illegal immigration stems from concerns about legality rather than immigration itself.

For many self-identified Democratic Catholics—including President Joe Biden—the pope’s remarks about abortion present a different challenge altogether. He described abortion as akin to killing or assassination without ambiguity: “Whether you like it or not, it is killing.” This statement leaves little room for interpretation and contrasts sharply with how some Americans reconcile their beliefs with current cultural norms surrounding abortion rights.

Since Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973, American society has increasingly viewed abortion as an acceptable choice and even a constitutional right; however, this perception remains contentious following its recent overturning by the Supreme Court in 2022.

While there are circumstances where killing may be justified according to Catholic teachings (such as just war), proponents of abortion rarely argue their case using similar justifications; instead they often frame it merely as medical care rather than acknowledging its lethal implications.

Pope Francis’ comments create a clear distinction regarding moral choices: Americans must weigh whether they prioritize preserving innocent lives against adhering to existing legal frameworks governing immigration policy—terms like “grave sin” and “assassination” carry significant weight when articulated by such an influential religious figure.

This perspective should provoke thought among millions—even those outside the Catholic faith—but ultimately presents straightforward choices for rational individuals grappling with these complex issues

[34059,32171,34207,40881,40882
post-2340980","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-election-2024","tag-political-commentary","tag-pope-francis","tag-trump-harris-race","tag-voter-insights
["GET
