The incident occurred in Placer County, California, around 3 a.m. on August 19 when the truck driver lost control. This caused the vehicle to veer off the highway and collide with a steel post and a tree before rolling down an embankment. The crash ignited a fire in the truck’s engine. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), traffic on I-80 was redirected while emergency responders worked to manage the blaze using about 50,000 gallons of water to put out the flames and cool down the vehicle’s batteries. Additionally, CAL FIRE deployed an aircraft to drop fire retardant in nearby areas as a precaution.

The report indicated that parts of I-80 were closed for 15 hours to ensure that battery temperatures were safe for recovery operations and prevent any potential spread of fire into surrounding forests. The truck was later moved to an open-air facility where it was monitored for 24 hours without any signs of battery reignition during that time.

Firefighters reported that during this incident, temperatures within the battery reached up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit after the crash fire had started. Cal Fire Division Chief Ryan Woessner explained that lithium-ion fires can be unpredictable; they continue until all charge is depleted and temperatures drop below 100 degrees Fahrenheit. He noted how damaged batteries can lead to thermal runaway situations where they ignite one another.

In light of these dangers associated with electric vehicles (EVs), particularly those powered by high-voltage lithium-ion batteries—such as risks of electric shock from damaged components—the NTSB has previously warned first responders about these hazards and recommended EV manufacturers provide specific firefighting guidelines for their vehicles.

Concerns have been raised regarding logistical challenges faced by emergency response teams in rural areas or along interstates lacking hydrants since they may need additional resources like water shuttles during such incidents involving EV fires

[40841,35224,40839,3907,40840
post-2340760","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-aircraft-assistance","tag-emergency-response","tag-ev-fire","tag-firefighters","tag-water-dumping
["GET
