The percentage of foreign-born individuals in the United States rose to 14.3 percent in 2023, up from 13.9 percent in 2022, based on estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s annual American Community Survey. This survey examines various aspects of life such as commuting times, internet access, family dynamics, income levels, education, disabilities, military service, and employment among other topics. International migrants have significantly contributed to population growth this decade; the current rate of foreign-born residents hasn’t been this high since 1910 when it was recorded at 14.7 percent due to waves of immigration seeking better opportunities.

In 2023 alone, international migrants represented more than two-thirds of population growth in the U.S., and they have accounted for nearly three-quarters of growth so far this decade. The increase is largely attributed to individuals coming from Latin America; their share within the foreign-born population rose from 50.3 percent to 51.2 percent year-over-year.

Among states experiencing notable increases in their foreign-born populations were Delaware (up to 11.2% from 9.9%), Georgia (up to 11.6% from 10.7%), and New Mexico (up to 10.2% from 9.3%). It’s important to note that Census Bureau figures do not specify whether these individuals are residing legally or illegally—a topic that has become a significant issue in the upcoming presidential election.

Additionally, last year saw an increase in U.S residents identifying as Hispanic—rising from 19.1% to 19.4%.
