Trump had previously called for debates on Sept. 4 and Sept. 25, which were denied by Harris.

Tensions between Harris and the national media bubbled into public view this week thanks to a letter to her campaign from the White House News Photographers Association.

“Since Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee for President of the United States,
the travel pool has been reduced from thirteen to nine, an unprecedented reduction in access to a major presidential party candidate,” it reads. “Every other representative of the press pool has been allowed to continue traveling without interruption, while the four independent news photographer seats have been downgraded to one.”

The letter was endorsed by news outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, and Associated Press. It argues that presidential campaigns typically allow a much larger number of writers and photographers to accompany them on trips and called for a “chaser plane” to allow more media access to Harris.

WHNPA President Jessica Koscielniak said she fears that reduced access could set a new precedent.

“Photographer and video journalists need to be seen as equal members of the press corps,” she told the Washington Examiner. “The press corps isn’t complete without them.”

The group has further asked the White House Correspondents’ Association to reallocate the nine currently available seats to accommodate more still photographers.

Harris press secretary Ernie Apreza responded with his own letter, saying that Harris has always had nine media members travel with her, a number that has not changed with her presidential candidacy. The president typically has 13. Apreza wrote that a chaser plane or additional seats on Air Force 2 are “not viable” and suggested photographers travel on their own to Harris events.

While Harris is now pledging to do more interviews with news outlets in battleground states, her campaign also has spats at that level. However, her media strategy continues to be significantly more reserved compared to Trump’s. On Thursday, her campaign issued a memo indicating intentions for “more media engagements,” but these will primarily involve local press in key battleground states. Additionally, she is set to participate in a panel discussion with the National Association of Black Journalists—an organization she previously declined an invitation from for its annual convention in July.

Since becoming the Democratic nominee on July 21, Harris has maintained a relatively distant relationship with the media, having given only one interview with a major television outlet alongside her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN). In contrast, Trump frequently engages with reporters and participates in extensive interviews across various platforms like podcasts. Harris has not held any press conferences and rarely takes questions from traveling journalists; however, after her strong debate performance against Trump—which he rejected—her campaign did request an additional debate.

Tensions between Harris and national media surfaced this week when the White House News Photographers Association sent a letter to her campaign expressing concerns over reduced access for photographers traveling with her. The letter noted that since she became the Democratic nominee, the travel pool size had decreased from thirteen to nine—a significant reduction for someone running for president—and called for increased media access through measures like a “chaser plane.” This letter received support from major news organizations such as The New York Times and The Washington Post.

In response, Harris’s press secretary Ernie Apreza stated that nine media members have always traveled with Harris and that this number hasn’t changed due to her candidacy; typically there are thirteen members accompanying presidential candidates. He also mentioned that adding more seats or providing additional travel options was not feasible and suggested photographers attend events independently.

While pledging more interviews with local news outlets in battleground states, tensions have also arisen at this level; notably, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported being barred from future events due to labor disputes involving part of its unionized workforce—the largest news organization in Pittsburgh.

David Greenberg, a professor at Rutgers University specializing in history and journalism studies, cautioned that this cautious approach could backfire on Harris’s campaign. He noted that while tightly controlled campaigns can be effective—as seen during Richard Nixon’s 1968 run—they may not yield similar results today. Greenberg believes it would benefit Harris to engage more spontaneously with reporters and voters rather than sticking strictly to scripted remarks since audiences often seek authenticity beyond prepared statements.

The Washington Examiner reached out for comments from the Harris campaign regarding these issues

[538
4021,40800,40802,40801,32076
post-2340519","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-washington-examiner","tag-harris","tag-media-strategy","tag-national-press","tag-risk-averse","tag-washington-examiner
["GET
