Donald Trump survived a bullet to the head by a would-be assassin; Joe Biden failed to survive a presidential debate. Kamala Harris has been the Democrats&rsquo; replacement candidate for such a short period of time that media are still talking about a Harris &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/09\/podcasts\/the-daily\/kamala-harris-honeymoon-over.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">honeymoon<\/a>&rdquo; &mdash; and she just got around to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/09\/09\/kamala-harris-policy-agenda-campaign-website\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">releasing<\/a> a policy platform this week.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, the first ballots are already in the mail and on their way to voters. Alabama, the first state to drop ballots in the mail, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/election-2024-first-ballots-voting-alabama-mail-1ef4f9694cc5edbb07fd3d641d6d248e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">started<\/a> shipping them out on Wednesday to absentee ballot applicants as well as military and overseas voters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e1486456d3077709d3232b4fa1153625 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-e1486456d3077709d3232b4fa1153625\"><\/div>\n<p>There are 55 days between Wednesday, the official start of election season, and Nov. 5, the date that still bears the moniker of Election Day. When ballots went out in Alabama Wednesday morning, only 52 days had passed since Biden got booted out of the race. <\/p>\n<p>The length of time from the launch of Harris&rsquo; campaign to the first ballots being mailed was <em><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/07\/us-news\/biden-took-48-years-worth-of-vacation-while-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one-tenth<\/a><\/em>  the number of days Biden spent on vacation during his presidency.<\/p>\n<p>A baby conceived on the day Harris launched her campaign could be legally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/04\/11\/abortion-laws-bans-state-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aborted<\/a> today in 32 states and the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>When the astronauts currently <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nasa-stuck-astronauts-boeing-starliner-92dca67a1fbecf05f5f0e6e2e79afc3b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stranded<\/a> in space left for the International Space Station, not only was Biden still Democrats&rsquo; nominee, but his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-must-remind-voters-that-harris-owns-the-failure-of-bidenomics-and-compare-his-record-of-economic-success-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Trump must remind voters that Harris owns the failure of \u2018Bidenomics\u2019 and compare his record of economic success - Washington Examiner\">career-ending debate<\/a> against Trump hadn&rsquo;t even happened yet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d278e1108f628afc6b88e31c1210c0ed fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-d278e1108f628afc6b88e31c1210c0ed\"><\/div>\n<p>When ballots went out Wednesday, the first Trump-Harris presidential debate, and likely the only one we&rsquo;ll get, had just taken place the night before. As recently as 2020 &mdash; the first election that, under the pretext of Covid precautions, saw our voting system transformed into a messy, months-long process &mdash; presidential debates were still taking place the week before Halloween. When Trump and Biden met for that debate, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/kSLtj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">42 million<\/a> Americans had already voted.<\/p>\n<p>After Tuesday&rsquo;s debate, one voter <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/voters-react-abc-news-presidential-debate-kamala-harris\/story?id=113590348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> ABC News he &ldquo;still do[es]n&rsquo;t know who she [Harris] is other than not Donald Trump.&rdquo; In a New York Times-Siena poll conducted last week, 28 percent of likely voters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/09\/08\/us\/politics\/times-siena-poll-likely-electorate-crosstabs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> they felt they needed to &ldquo;learn more&rdquo; about her. That might have something to do with the fact that Harris hid from reporters for more than a month after she assumed her candidacy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/29\/politics\/harris-walz-interview-read-transcript\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finally<\/a> sitting down with a friendly network (and with her bumbling sidekick at her side) on Aug. 29. But it also reflects the fact that she just hasn&rsquo;t been in the race for very long.<\/p>\n<p>The first mail ballots were actually scheduled to go out before this week&rsquo;s debate. North Carolina was slated to mail ballots out last week but had to reprint them after Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. won a battle with the state election board to withdraw from the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>In battleground Wisconsin, clerks can mail absentee ballots as soon as they get them, and are <a href=\"https:\/\/myvote.wi.gov\/en-us\/Voter-Deadlines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">required<\/a> to send them out to voters with &ldquo;an active request already on file&rdquo; by Sept. 19. Ballots will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/11\/politics\/early-voting-election-what-matters\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">go out<\/a> to military and overseas voters from every state by Sept. 21, the 45-day mark before Election Day.
