The committee plans to hold a full markup on this resolution next week, where they will likely decide whether to send the contempt charges to the entire House for a vote. According to committee Chairman Mike McCaul (R-TX), members will convene on September 19 at 2 p.m. This action follows last week’s issuance of a subpoena as part of the committee’s investigation into the chaotic withdrawal, which resulted in a suicide bombing near Kabul International Airport that killed 13 U.S. service members and left others behind when the Taliban took control again.

Although lawmakers recently completed their report, which largely criticized the Biden administration while downplaying former President Donald Trump’s involvement, McCaul emphasized that he still wants Blinken’s testimony regarding his role in this situation. He described it as “a catastrophic failure of epic proportions” and stated his intention to hold Blinken in contempt if necessary.

The committee had previously requested Blinken’s testimony, but those requests were reportedly ignored by the State Department. In response, department officials pointed out that Blinken has testified before Congress over 14 times about Afghanistan—more than any other Cabinet member—expressing disappointment over what they see as an unnecessary subpoena instead of continued good-faith engagement with them.

McCaul argued that Blinken’s testimony is crucial for considering potential legislation aimed at preventing similar mistakes in future withdrawals and possible reforms within the Department’s legislative authorization process. It remains uncertain when or if this contempt resolution will be brought before the House for voting since lawmakers are currently focused on finalizing a stopgap spending deal ahead of an impending government shutdown scheduled for October 1 and are expected to adjourn until after November elections thereafter

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/ap-antony-blinken-state-department-091024.webp
[4636,7074,40765
post-2340319","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-blinken","tag-contempt","tag-house-subpoena
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/ap-antony-blinken-state-department-091024.webp
["GET
