Given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/mrna-vaccines-may-make-unintended-proteins-there-s-no-evidence-harm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ongoing<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC11130870\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">controversies<\/a> about prior Covid mRNA vaccines during the pandemic, the FDA should do the work to assure the American people that the well-established standards for vaccine approval are applied to these novel mRNA technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA could release the latest Covid shots without proving safety and efficacy because they remain under the &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-and-authorizes-updated-mrna-covid-19-vaccines-better-protect-against-currently\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emergency use authorization<\/a>&rdquo; (EUA) category. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/regulatory-information\/search-fda-guidance-documents\/emergency-use-authorization-medical-products-and-related-authorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the FDA<\/a>, &ldquo;The &lsquo;may be effective&rsquo; standard for EUAs provides for a lower level of evidence than the &lsquo;effectiveness&rsquo; standard that FDA uses for product approvals.&rdquo; The FDA has this authority only because the secretary of health and human services <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2020\/02\/07\/2020-02496\/determination-of-public-health-emergency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">determined<\/a> on Feb. 4, 2020, that there was a public health emergency that involved the virus that causes Covid-19, and this determination has remained in place over four years later.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8ca7b1b9f01debf481e2babb2ce60f7a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-8ca7b1b9f01debf481e2babb2ce60f7a\"><\/div>\n<p>In 2020, the U.S. was in a Covid public health emergency, but are we still in September 2024?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#datatracker-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> that as of Aug. 31, only 2.3 percent of emergency room visits were for Covid. The <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#datatracker-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rate of hospitalization<\/a> for Covid is only 0.005 percent and is dropping. From a peak&nbsp;death rate in 2021 of 26,028 Americans per week, there are only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nvss\/vsrr\/covid19\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">663 &ldquo;deaths involving COVID-19&rdquo;<\/a> in the latest weekly CDC data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The reduced death rate today is a result of several factors, starting with the fact that the most vulnerable people, due to age or comorbid medical conditions, have already died in the earlier waves of Covid. The immunity from the multiple prior vaccines also provides some value, as does the immunity from prior infections. Finally, beginning with the Omicron strain, the SARS-CoV-2 virus traded a higher infectivity capability with a reduced deadliness. This beneficial evolutionary path of the virus could have had a different, deadlier outcome. For that we can take no credit.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Health and Human Services should use the Covid data from the CDC to reevaluate whether a Covid public health emergency exists and consider declaring the pandemic over in the United States. After all, both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/05-05-2023-statement-on-the-fifteenth-meeting-of-the-international-health-regulations-(2005)-emergency-committee-regarding-the-coronavirus-disease-(covid-19)-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.cdc.gov\/www_cdc_gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/your-health\/end-of-phe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC<\/a> determined in May 2023 that Covid was no longer a global or public health emergency, and HHS and the FDA should be leading the world in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-covid-19-nursing-home-death-toll-soars-in-new-disclosure\/\" title=\"New York COVID-19 Nursing Home Death Toll Soars In New Disclosure\">health care policy<\/a>, not being over one year behind the curve.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7fbc7edb70059d8dea48b08e871e37cc fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-7fbc7edb70059d8dea48b08e871e37cc\"><\/div>\n<p>Without the HHS emergency designation, the FDA would have the chance, as the premier world organization for evaluating the safety and efficacy of new medicines, to put their imprimatur on the Covid vaccines. Academic papers abound on both sides of the risk-benefit ratio, some showing clear benefits and some highlighting unusual risks. Until the FDA stops approving new Covid vaccines under the EUA, and analyzes and reports the safety and efficacy of Covid mRNA vaccines based on established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/vaccines-blood-biologics\/vaccines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standards<\/a>, there will remain a cloud of uncertainty about taking these medicines. There is extensive academic literature discussing both sides of vaccine risk-benefit analyses; some studies indicate clear advantages while others point out potential risks.
