According to USA Today, this match involved the New York Knickerbockers and the New York Nines, a cricket team. The game was said to have been played under “Knickerbocker Rules,” although it’s uncertain if these “unwritten rules” of baseball were actually followed by both teams. For those unfamiliar, MLB acknowledged these “unofficial” rules in 2020, which primarily emphasize sportsmanship. MLB stated guidelines such as: “Don’t steal bases or swing at 3-0 pitches when leading by a large margin,” “Don’t showboat after home runs when trailing significantly,” and “Don’t swing at the first pitch after back-to-back home runs allowed by a pitcher.”

If any of these unwritten rules are breached, retaliation often involves throwing at batters as a form of punishment for perceived violations. MLB explained that this is how tensions manifest within the game—through intentional hits or even wild throws aimed behind a batter’s back. While this practice may seem harsh, it has been part of baseball culture for many years.

In light of such retaliatory actions being described as “barbaric,” one might wonder about pitchers who hit players out of frustration; some liken it to a child throwing a tantrum. This sentiment was echoed by Philadelphia Phillies player Nick Castellanos after he was hit by Tampa Bay Rays reliever Edwin Uceta during their recent game where the Phillies won decisively with a score of 9-4.

Castellanos expressed his displeasure towards Uceta for hitting him despite there being no breach in sportsmanship on his part. Uceta entered the game during an intense moment with two runners on base and allowed several hits that quickly escalated the score from tied at 4-4 to 9-4 against him.

Following his poor performance on the mound, Uceta chose to retaliate against Castellanos without justification. The situation escalated into both teams clearing their benches due to Castellanos’ visible anger over being hit intentionally.

When speaking with reporters afterward, Castellanos did not hold back: “I told him that was bulls***… You’re throwing over 90 miles an hour out of frustration?” He compared Uceta’s actions to that of his toddler having a meltdown over losing dessert before finishing dinner.

Castellanos had anticipated he might be targeted and believed it stemmed from Uceta’s own frustrations rather than any wrongdoing on his part: “He was just [ticked] off because he got hit around.” In contrast, Uceta claimed there was no intent behind hitting Castellanos; he insisted it was simply an errant pitch while trying to regain control during his struggle on the mound

[15360,40677,11547,23921,40676
post-2339874","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-baseball","tag-benches-clear","tag-pitcher","tag-rays","tag-unwritten-rules
["GET
